Redskins vs. Buccaneers Pick NFL Week 4
RG3, that really all there is to say about the Washington Redskins. The Redskins have seemed to strike gold drafting Robert Griffin with the 2nd pick overall in the draft. Andrew Luck went first to the Colts, but all talk has been about this electrifying quarterback out of Baylor. Griffin has not only been lightning in a bottle for the Redskins, but gamblers and fantasy players have taken note. In week 4, Griffin and the Redskins will make the trip south to Florida for a meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Both squads have question marks hanging over their heads, the question being if they are good or below average teams. The Redskins and Buccaneers have both showed flashes of greatness, but have also looked a little shaky. Perhaps some questions can be answered in this matchup.
I could sing the praises of RG3 all article long, but you have most certainly heard of what he is all about. He has done it with his legs, the deep ball, and by making smart decisions on a consistent basis. Just when you think he is going to regress, he comes back with a stellar performance. His latest act concluded with a loss; however, Griffin still managed 221 yards through the air and 85 on the ground. He also chipped in with two touchdowns, one passing and rushing. The Redskins have also found an unlikely hero in sixth round selection Alfred Morris out of Florida Atlantic. The first-year running back leads all rookies with 263-yards and 3 TDs. Much of his success is accredited to the style of offense they run under RG3. The Redskins utilize a college hybrid offense in a sense with the option used frequently. Unfortunately for the ‘Skins, that’s about all there is to say about them. They acquired receiver Pierre Garcon from the Colts in the offseason, but he has only been able to play a game due to a foot injury. He will be questionable for week 4. Nevertheless, RG3 is still carrying the team on his back with 747 passing yards and 209 yards on his feet. His 7 TDs (3 rushing) and 1 INTs is an impressive feat to say the least for a rookie, good enough for the sixth best QB rating in the NFL at 103.5. His reckless abandoned style is something to keep an eye on, though, as it seems the Redskins only pick up yards when he is putting his body on the line.
If a team is going to exploit the Buccaneers it going to be through the air as they are lead last, surrendering an average of 353 yards. Much of those yards accredited to the Eli Manning air-raid on them two weeks ago. They do, however, have an impressive run stop. While they rank last against the pass, they are first against the run at 47.3 yards per game.
If RG3 had a defense to rely on then maybe we would be talking about a good team. The “Skins desperately need their leader back, linebacker Brian Orakpo. Orakpo won’t see the field this Sunday, or for the rest of the year for that matter due to a torn pectoral. Without Orakpo they have looked flat out bad, ranked 30th in the league allowing 429 yards per game and 33.7 points a game. The Buccaneers have an offense that has the potential to explode, or lay a dud. Last week was without a doubt a dud, losing to the Cowboys 16-10. Quarterback Josh Freeman only managed 110 yards and a TD after an offensive explosion against the Giants the week before.

Redskins vs. Buccaneers Pick:
I’m not sure teams are going to be able to shut RG3 down completely, but I think eventually they are going to catch on. The problem I think the Redskins have at the moment is their lack of a number one receiver. This issue certainly hasn’t reared its horns yet, but if Pierre Garcon continues to sit on the sidelines, I think defenses are going to be able to zero in on the running game of Griffin and Morris. In this case this week, they will be going up against the best rushing defense in the NFL. Head coach Mike Shanahan has came out publicly and stated that RG3 is taking too many hits, I’m not sure this offense will hold up as the season progresses.
I really like the Buccaneers offense to bounce back after a deplorable effort against the Cowboys. If the Redskins don’t have the talent to keep up with the Rams, I don’t see them doing much better against the Buccaneers. The Redskins need more than just RG3 to be a good team, at the moment, this is a one many show. Give him a decent defense and some weapons to work with, and then this will be a team worth looking out for. Until then, though, give me the Buccaneers on a short line at home.
PICK = Buccaneers -2
