Keeping away with the mentality earlier in the decade, the Baltimore Orioles, beginning last season, have been committed to youth movement in hopes of building a World Series Winner through trades for prospects, and by drafting. Last year Miguel Tejada and Erik Bedard were traded for prospects in a hope to rebuild the foundation of the franchise, which has come on hard times. This led to acquisition of key players such as Luke Scott, Adam Jones and George Sherill. This season the trend continued as the Orioles were able to acquire Felix Pie and Rich Hill in hopes that they reach their full potential in the O’s organization, and become contenders for a World Series title. This line-up will become even younger when stud prospect catcher Matt Wieters finally makes the leap from the minor leagues, and becomes the franchise cornerstone. The line-up also includes veterans Melvin Mora, Brian Roberts, as well as stud outfielder Nick Markakis. The pitching staff is also quite young and still trying to create an identity for itself.

When looking at the Orioles team and their odds of winning the World Series in 2009, stacked up against the others in the AL East (Rays, Red Six, Yankees, and even the Blue Jays), it is really hard to see them contending for a playoff spot. The odds makers seem to be of the same opinion as the Orioles odds are listed at +15000 to win the World Series. That means for every $100 bet for the Orioles, the pay out would be $15100! The only thing working in Baltimore’s favor is that since they are a young team, they have a great opportunity to get better, and could be this years Tampa Bay Rays.
