Detroit Tigers World Series Odds
2009 Article:
In 2008, the Detroit Tigers disappointed many people, as they were considered one of the major contenders to win the World Series and ended up with an under 500 record. The Tigers got off to a horrible start, and were unable to recover do to injuries to the pitching staff, and a line up that, overall, underachieved. With a new opportunity to prove that they are indeed, still a contender to win the championship in 2009, and with the injured members of the pitching staff, such as Jeremy Bonderman and Fernando Rodney, now healthy, the Tigers should have an excellent opportunity to win the AL Central. The Tigers made minor additions to their squad, adding depth to their pitching staff (Brandon Lyon and Edwin Jackson) and improving their team defense (Adam Everett). Justin Verlander should also be much better than his 17 losses of 2008 and return to ace status. The Tigers offence should also be among the top of the league as they field line up with former batting champ Magglio Ordonez, reigning Al Home Run Champ Miguel Cabrera, improving outfielder Curtis Granderson, and veterans Carlos Guillen and Placido Polonco.
Given that last year many sporting books had the Tigers as the favorite to win the league, the Odds for the Detroit Tigers winning the World Series in 2009 aren’t as good as they would be for any other team that went 74-88 the season prior. However, considering the Detroit Tigers were one of the favorites in 2008, it is quite enticing to be able to get basically the same team, within a division around them as volatile as any (3 different division winners and 1 wild card birth in last 3 years), at +2000 odds, which is where the Tigers are being set prior the 2009 season. That means for ever $100 bet, you would win $2100. Typically, a team with the Tigers record last year, with as little off-season movement, would have much higher odds (Atlanta was 72-90, set at +3300) Being that the Tigers have a team that run any out of the park on a given night, and should have improved pitching, putting a bet on the Detroit Tigers, at +2000, is a great value bet as the Tigers have the potential to run away with the AL Central Division
