First let me tell you that the Maple Leafs are my boys. At the start of the season I called that the Maple Leafs were at least going to place 8th in the eastern conference, most people laughed at that prediction. On paper the 2008/2009 Maple Leafs have probably the worst team in the NHL. Before the season started I’m sure most people thought the Maple Leafs had about a one in a million chance of winning the Stanley Cup in 2009.

As I am writing this the Leafs have played 12 games and have a record of 5-4-3, beating teams like the Ottawa Senators and power house New York Rangers. I am sure this has turned some people’s heads.

At the start of the season some sportsbooks had the Toronto Maple Leafs 2009 Stanley Cup odds at over 100-1. This meant that a $10 bet would pay out $1000 if won. That’s pretty good odds for a Leafs so I had to throw down a $10 bet on it.

As of November 4th the Toronto Maple Leafs odds of winning the Stanley Cup are set at 67-1 on Partybets.com. This means that a $10 bet on the Maple Leafs to win the Stanley cup in 2009 would pay out $670.

Some professional handicappers have actually stated that picking the Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup may not be a bad idea. With a top five goalie (Toskala), a top five Eastern Conference D-man (Kaberle), and the possibility of Mats Sundin returning to the team it just may happen. To be realistic – it most likely won’t happen but with the odds it is worth a shot.
