Atlanta Braves vs Minnesota Twins MLB Pick – August 5

The MLB is set up with a total of fourteen games on Monday night. One of the top matchups on the board will be between the Atlanta Braves and the Minnesota Twins. These two teams are playoff teams to this point in the season, which should help lead to a great game on August 5. This game will start at around 8:10 PM Eastern time.

Atlanta has posted a record of 66-47 to this point in the season, which has them sitting in first place of the NL East. The Braves are coming off a tough loss in their last game, but Atlanta has been able to win four of their last six games. The Braves are looking to start this seven game road trip with a win in Minnesota on Monday night.

The Twins are 69-42 so far this season, which has them in the top spot of the AL Central division. Minnesota are coming off a three game series sweep against the Kansas City Royals and will look to earn a win in the first matchup against the Braves. The Twins are 8-2 in their last ten games and will look to keep that streak going with another win on Monday.

These two teams have put up solid records throughout this season and will look to earn a win on Monday night. These are two of the best batting teams in the league and it could help lead to a good three game series. This will be the only series between the Braves and the Twins this season, so they will both look to make the most of it now.

Previous Matchups

The last time these two teams met was back in 2016. The Twins hosted the first two game series of the season, where the Braves won 9-7 and 2-0. The next two game series was in Atlanta, where Minnesota swept the two matchups by scores of 4-2 and 10-3. Both teams finished in last place of their division that season.

This season they are both at the top of their division, which will lead to a more exciting series.

The Braves are coming off a four game series against the Cincinnati Reds. Atlanta went 2-2 in the series at home. The Braves won the first game 4-1 on a solid pitching performance from Max Fried. The Reds bounced back with a 5-2 win in the second game. Atlanta hit a walk off in the tenth inning to win 5-4 in the third game, but lost 6-4 in the tenth inning in the final match of this series.

Minnesota played the Kansas City Royals before this series, sweeping all three games of the series at home. The Twins started with a 11-9 win off a five RBI performance from Nelson Cruz. Cruz then had another five RBI’s in the second game as Minnesota won 11-3. Devin Smeltzer only allowed two hits in six innings as the Twins shut out the Royals 3-0 in the final game of the series.

Freddie Freeman has been doing great this season. Freeman has earned 130 hits, 26 home runs, 86 RBI’s and an OPS of .950. Ronald Acuna Jr. has put up 132 hits, 27 home runs and 70 RBI’s. Ozzie Albies has also done well this season, putting up 127 hits, 15 homers and 58 RBI’s. Josh Donaldson has 101 hits, 26 home runs and 67 RBI’s. Austin Riley and Brian McCann both have double digit home runs this season as well.

The Twins have seen a good season from multiple hitters this year. Jorge Polanco has earned 132 hits, 17 home runs and 55 RBI’s. Max Kepler has 109 hits, 30 homers and 76 RBI’s. Eddie Rosario has 107 hits with 23 home runs and 74 RBI’s. Nelson Cruz has 90 hits, 30 homers, 72 RBI’s and an OPS of 1.039. Mitch Garver, Miguel Sano, Jason Castro, Marwin Gonzalez, Jonathan Schoop and C.J. Cron all have double digit home runs this season.

Both of these teams have a lot of good hitters, which could lead to a high scoring game at some point this series. The Braves have been hurt by the absences of Nick Markakis and Dansby Swanson. Atlanta has struggled a bit with these two players out of their lineup. The Twins will look to take advantage of this throughout this series.

Mike Soroka has broken onto the scene this season and he will get the start on Monday night. Soroka has put up a record of 10-2 throughout his 19 starts this season. He has an ERA of 2.37 and a WHIP of 1.114 through those starts. Soroka’s last start came against the Washington Nationals, where he allowed three hits and one run through seven innings as the Braves pulled off a 5-4 win.

The Twins will have Jake Odorizzi start on the mound for Monday night’s tilt. Odorizzi has earned a 12-5 record through 21 starts this season. He has an ERA of 3.73 and a WHIP of 1.187 throughout this season as well. His last start came against the Miami Marlins, where he allowed four hits and one run through five and two thirds innings in route to a win.

Both of these pitchers have found a ton of success this season. This game will be a huge test for Atlanta’s rookie as he will try to put up a strong start against a good hitting team.

A glimpse into my prediction:

I believe that Soroka will raise his game to the occasion. If he can put up a strong start, I believe that he will help lead the Braves to a big win.

Pick Overview

Both of these teams have strong hitting lineups, but I believe that Monday night’s matchup will come down to pitchers. Mike Soroka has put up the better numbers this season, but this game will be a big test for him. If he can earn a win against the Twins, it could prove to the Braves he is ready to be a top three pitcher in the playoffs on this roster. I like him to raise his game on Monday.

BetOnline has Minnesota listed as a -108 against the money line. This gives a slight edge to the Twins at home, which makes sense. I like how these team’s matchup, but with the Braves coming off a loss to the Reds, I believe that they will look to come out fast to bounce back. As underdogs in this game, I believe there is a lot of value on Atlanta, making them my pick of the night.
