The Chinatrust Brothers and Fubon Guardians meet for the final game of a three-game series on Sunday. Chinatrust are winners of the first two meetings, with the Brothers stomping on the Guardians for a 11-0 win on Friday, and then cutting it closer with a 6-5 win yesterday. Despite giving away a 4-1 lead and trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the 6th.
Chinatrust rebounded to tie the match up in the top of the 7th and then went ahead with another run in the 8th. The pitching for the Brothers was able to hold strong and not have another frame like the 6th. That was the only trouble spot for Chinatrust in the contest. Other than the 6th inning, the Brothers allowed only a run in every other inning.
With the two wins for the Brothers, they’re 4-5 on the season to claw back some of their early losses. The Rakuten Monkeys continue to hold an impressive lead over the competition, with a record of 7-1 going into today. Last night the Monkeys suffered their first loss to stop a seven-game losing streak to open the 2020 campaign.
It was only a matter of time before Rakuten were going to lose a match and it happened because of a porous bullpen blowing a 7-2 lead. Whether it’s the CPBL, KBO, or MLB, quality pitching from the bullpen is vitally important. The Monkeys came close to losing a couple of games because of a leaky bullpen prior to coughing that lead up. The good news is that the Monkeys are still the best club in the league and can still win without a pristine bullpen.
The Fubon Guardians are off to a disappointing start with a record of 3-6 going into Sunday. They’re on a three-game losing streak and have only won a game since opening the season with two straight wins over the Brothers. Jose De Paula is expected to make his third start for Chinatrust in this contest. The CPBL rookie has been serviceable thus far in two outings. Fubon is scheduled to counter De Paula with Ting-Wei You. He will be making his first appearance in 2020. Head below for our free Chinatrust Brothers vs. Fubon Guardians pick.
Chinatrust Brothers vs. Fubon Guardians CPBL Betting Odds:
Chinatrust Brothers vs. Fubon Guardians Prediction:
The Chinatrust offense has been in good form the last two outings. They put on an absolute clinic two days ago to blow the Guardians out by a score of 11-0. A clinic at the plate and on the bump. The Brothers were able to follow that up with 6 runs the next day. Their pitching has been more than presentable in recent contests. In the last four games, their pitching staff has allowed an average of 3 runs per game. And the fact that two of those matchups were against the Rakuten Monkeys makes it especially impressive. They held the Monkeys to 7 runs in two games, with 4 and 3 runs in each outing.
There’s been nothing wrong with the pitching of Jose De Paula in two appearances. He posted a 4.15 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 13 innings of work. That’s certainly not terrific or anything, but if the bats are working like they can for the Brothers, that’d be good enough for a win. This is his first season in the CPBL, having spent time in the Dominican Winter League before signing with Chinatrust. He was good there as well, with a 3.26 ERA in 49.2 innings pitched. He may not have the talent to have another opportunity in the majors, but he likely finds a home in the CPBL.
Time-Wei You is in the saddle for his first outing in 2020. He made three starts to warmup with the II team this season and it didn’t go swimmingly. You was touched up for a 6.23 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in 15.2 innings. As a rookie in 2019, You was okay in 12 showings, as he ended the season with a 4.47 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. His 2020 campaign could go in just about any direction, but it’s hard to see him as a -160 favorite here. The high price is likely what you’re going to have to pay if you think the Guardians can’t get swept at home. There’s a better chance of that happening than the odds suggest. The value bet appears to be on the Chinatrust Brothers.
