The MLB is set up with a busy Tuesday night as fifteen games are on the board. One of the games set to go down will be between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the New York Mets. These two teams are still in competition for a wild card spot, which should help lead to an exciting game on Tuesday night. This game will start at around 7:10 PM Eastern time.
The Diamondbacks have earned a record of 75-69, which has them sitting in second place of the NL West. Arizona has won eleven of their last fourteen games down the stretch. If the Diamondbacks can continue to keep up this strong streak, they could make the playoffs. Arizona is two games back from the last wild card spot, but could advance with some big road wins in this series.
New York has gone 73-70 throughout this season, which has them in fourth place of the NL East. The Mets have won six of their last ten games but will need to pick it up if they want to sneak into a wild card spot. New York is sitting three and a half games back from the last wild card spot. The Mets will look to win the second game of this series on Tuesday night.
These two teams have had solid seasons and are in positions to make a playoff push late in this season. Both teams have a bit of urgency as the season gets closer and closer to the end. I expect a solid matchup as both teams look to win this series to move up a step closer to earning that final wild card spot.
The first series between these two teams was back between May 31 and June 2. The first game was a close one. J.D. Davis and Carlos Gomez both had RBI’s in the top of the eighth to give New York the late lead. Zach Wheeler got the win as he allowed four runs and seven hits through seven innings as the Mets won 5-4.
The second game was another close one. The Diamondbacks found themselves down 5-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning. Ketel Marte and Eduardo Escobar both had RBI’s to close in on the Mets. Adam Jones hit a two run homer to tie it up. Tim Locastro hit a walk off RBI in the eleventh inning to give Arizona a big 6-5 win.
The third and final game of the series was not nearly as close as the first two. Ketel Marte had three RBI’s and a solo home run on his first at bat. Eduardo Escobar hit a two run homer to help extend the lead for the Diamondbacks. Merrill Kelly earned the win on the mound as he allowed one run and six hits through seven and two thirds innings as Arizona ended the series with a 7-1 win.
The first game of this series was on Monday night. Pete Alonso hit a homer to open up the game in the first inning. Wilmer Flores hit a homer to make it a 2-1 game, but Alonso iced the game with his second homer of the night in the fifth inning. Jacob deGrom pitched for eight innings and only allowed three hits and one run to help give the Mets a 3-1 win.
Ketel Marte has had a strong season for the Diamondbacks this season. Marte has earned 178 hits, 32 home runs and 91 RBI’s. Eduardo Escobar has put up 153 hits, 33 homers and 110 RBI’s. Nick Ahmed has 130 hits, 18 homers and 79 RBI’s, while Christian Walker has 123 hits, 25 home runs and 63 RBI’s. Adam Jones and Carson Kelly both have over double-digit homers this season as well.
New York has seen an amazing season from Pete Alonso. He has 142 hits, 47 home runs, 109 RBI’s and an OPS of .956. Amed Rosario has 158 hits, 12 homers and 60 RBI’s, while Jeff McNeil has 147 hits, 18 home runs and 65 RBI’s. Michael Conforto has put up 127 hits, 29 home runs and 81 RBI’s. Wilson Ramos, J.D. Davis, Todd Frazier, and Robinson Cano all have double digit homers as well this season.
These two teams have solid hitting lineups, but I believe that the Mets have a slightly better hitting lineup. Alonso has been dangerous this season and it showed in last nights matchup. If Arizona’s pitching staff can find a way to slow Alonso down on Tuesday night, I believe that they could pull off a big win.
Zac Gallen will start on the mound for the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. Gallen has put up a 3-4 record through 13 starts this season. He has earned an ERA of 2.50 and a WHIP of 1.229 through those starts. Gallen’s last start came against the San Diego Padres, where he allowed one hit and no runs through seven innings to earn his third win of the season.
Zack Wheeler will be the starting pitcher for New York. Wheeler has gone 10-7 throughout his 27 starts this season. He has put up a 4.33 ERA and a WHIP of 1.311. Wheeler’s last start came against the Washington Nationals. He earned his tenth win of the season as he allowed one run and seven hits through five innings pitched.
These two pitchers have been solid throughout their starts this season. Gallen has put up the better stats, but he has played in half the games as Wheeler. Wheeler has a strong record and earned a win in his first start against the Diamondbacks. Gallen had a no decision in his start against New York as a member of the Marlins.
These two teams have gone 2-2 against each other in the season series. Both teams are less than five games back from the final wild card spot. I believe that Arizona has a good chance to take the series lead with a win on Tuesday night. Gallen is a strong pitcher and I like his chances to slow down New York. The Diamondbacks need to get the bats going, but if they can, I believe they will win the second game of this series.
BetOnline has New York listed as a -130 against the money line. This implies that the Mets will win this game around 56.5 percent of the time. I believe that this game should be much closer to even. I like the Diamondbacks chances to win, which makes them a strong pick for Tuesday night.
