Doosan Bears vs. KT Wiz Pick – KBO June 2, 2020

The Doosan Bears and KT Wiz will begin a three-game series at the Suwon Baseball Stadium on Tuesday. The KT Wiz are still in the infancy stages as a franchise compared to the others, as they are in their sixth season playing in the KBO. The first four seasons were a major struggle for the Wiz, but there were glimmers of hope present in 2019.

They had more than 60 wins for the first time in franchise history, and the Wiz also bypassed 60 wins and got to 70+ for a record of 71-71-2. The Wiz are looking to build on that record and do even better in 2020. So far we don’t really have many answers. The Wiz head into Tuesday with a record of 10-13. There isn’t much to gather from that other than that the Wiz have been an average team up to this point.

At times they’ve looked really good, and other times not so much. Finding some consistency is going to be their next step to becoming a serious contender. The Wiz are coming off a 12-8 win over the Kiwoom Heroes in impressive fashion on Sunday. Mel Rojas Jr. was the big winner of the day, as he recorded 5 RBI’s. The former Pittsburgh Pirate has been just about unstoppable for the Wiz in 2020.

Rojas Jr. is hitting .409 with 6 home runs in 23 games. He was unable to make it past AAA ball in the Pirates’ organization, but Rojas Jr. has been making a name for himself in the KBO. You can make a solid career out of playing baseball in South Korea, and Rojas. Jr is not in danger of losing his job any time soon.

As a 30-year-old, Rojas. Jr shouldn’t be expecting any phone calls from major league clubs, though. The Wiz will give former major leaguer, Odrisamer Despaigne, the nod for his sixth start in the KBO. Despaigne has been on point in five starts as a KBO rookie. He will be countered by Yu Hui-kwan of the Doosan Bears on Tuesday. Yu has been off to a solid start as well, but his numbers suggest that he might be a bit fortunate. Doosan Bears vs. KT Wiz Prediction:

For some pitchers coming from overseas, the transition to baseball in Asia can often be difficult. However, there are some that feel comfortable right away and fire away like they’ve been in South Korea for years. Odrisamer Despaigne has had no issues adjusting to life in the KBO with the KT Wiz. Despaine has been on fire in five outings. He’s allowed just 6 earned runs in 32 innings of work.

That equates to a 1.69 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in his first season in South Korea. Despaigne is coming off a spectacular performance against the KIA Tigers on May 27. He went 8 strong innings without allowing a run and just 4 hits. Across 20 innings of work at home, Despaigne has given up only 2 earned runs. The Bears are a tricky assignment on Tuesday, but he should be able to hold in there and allow his potent offense to go to work.

The Wiz are first in the KBO with a batting average of .306. They can really swing the bats, and have scored an average of 6.4 runs per game for second in the league. Rojas Jr. and his batting average of .409 certainly has something to do with that. Yu Hui-kwan will do his best to keep the Wiz’s bats quiet in this contest.

Yu has posted an ERA of 3.27 in four outings this season. However, he also has a 1.73 WHIP, so runners have definitely been finding their way on the bases. Opposing batters have notched 28 hits and 10 walks against Yu in 22 innings. Allowing that many runners to reach spells like trouble against a Wiz offense that has the talent to keep runners moving around the bases. This looks like a spot for the Wiz to earn a win over a solid Bears squad at home.
