The Doosan Bears and Lotte Giants will meet for the third and final match of a three-game series on Thursday. The Bears and Giants have split and will play the rubber-match today. It should have been two wins in a row for the Bears, but their abysmal bullpen decided to throw the win away.
They managed to tie the game up in the bottom of the 9th, but with zero confidence of getting past the bottom half of the inning, the Giants scored a walkoff home run to win 10-9. While the pitching let them down, it was another impressive day for the Bears’ offense. It was the third straight game that the Bears scored at least 9 runs. That’s been the good news for the Bears, but their bullpen needs some work.
The Bears got started early yesterday, as they found 2 runs in the top of the 1st, but Lee Young-Ha gave it right back with 2 runs conceded. Lee did manage to settle in and have a nice game, though. That was the only runs he gave up in 5 innings of work. He gave them a great chance to win the game, but three members of the bullpen combined to allow 7 earned runs. Awful day for the relievers of the Doosan Bears.
If you think that your bet is safe in the KBO late in games, think again. Bad bullpens are just part of the deal. It happens in the majors, naturally, but you’ll see big leads evaporate fast in the KBO occasionally. That’s the same with the CPBL, even more so. One could call that entertaining, but if you’re betting, it can at times be frustrating. Relievers in the KBO are still much better than what you’re going to find in the CPBL.
Kudos to the Lotte Giants, as they’re off to a 6-1 start after finishing dead last in the league a season ago. It’s way too early to establish if this is for real or not. I just warn to be cautious. If you’re new to the KBO, the Giants were a 48-93-3 club last season. The only club to finish without 50 wins on the season. Conversely, the Bears were 88-55-1 and won the Korean Series. Chris Flexen will get the call as the starter for the Bears today, while Park se-woong is expected for the Giants. Doosan Bears vs. Lotte Giants Prediction:
The Bears are going to come out swinging again on Thursday. Their offense will likely put a lot of pressure on the Giants’ bats to counter in this one. They answered the call on Wednesday, as they put up 10 runs to outlast the Bears. Park Se-woong is coming off a mediocre debut in 2020, as he was touched up for 3 earned runs in just 4.2 innings of work for a 5.79 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. He was pulled after his pitch count got all the way up to 87 pitches. Park couldn’t make it past that, and he was pulled to a no-decision.
Park had a terrible 2018 after posting a 9.92 ERA and 2.29 WHIP in 14 games. He was able to stabilize his numbers in 2019, but still nothing spectacular, as Park ended the season with a 4.20 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 12 outings. It wasn’t good enough to help the Giants win many games.
He recorded a record of 3-6 despite his numbers improving from the previous year. What are we going to see from Park this season? His first start suggests something in the middle between 2018 and 2019, but his numbers could take an additional dive against the red-hot Bears’ offense on Thursday.
Chris Flexen had a very average KBO debut on May 7, as he allowed 3 earned runs in 6 innings against the LG Twins. Flexen should feel a bit fortunate to get out of that game with only 3 runs conceded after allowing 7 hits and a walk. He got himself into some trouble, but was able to wiggle his way out of it.
Flexen will have to chew up several innings to help the Bears’ bullpen out, which has been having a lot of issues thus far. As a team, the Bears’ pitching staff owns a collective ERA of 7.00, which is dead last in the KBO. They’ve allowed the most hits with 88 in total, though their offense leads the KBO with a batting average of .330. The Bears are 2nd with 48 runs scored, while the Giants are 1st in the league with 49 runs scored. This is likely another high-scoring matchup between the Bears and Giants.
