The Uni-Lions poured it on early and often yesterday, as they crushed the Fubon Guardians by a score of 12-6. Uni got ahead by 5 runs in the 1st inning and that lead ballooned to 7-0 by the end of the 3rd frame. Our OVER wager was in good company without much of a sweat job. The Fubon Guardians made it interesting with 5 runs between the 4th and 5th inning, but the Uni-Lions quickly got their offense going full speed again in the next half inning. 5 more runs for the Uni-Lions is what they needed to pull away for an easy 12-6 win. It was an easy win for the Lions and easy winner for us on the OVER.
The Lions started out of the gates relatively slow, but have been playing better ball of late. They went on a four-game losing streak after opening the season with a win against the Chinatrust Brothers. Uni were 2-5 across the first seven games of their schedule. Their offense has been waking up, though, and the Lions are 4-2 in their previous six tilts after starting 2-5. They head into Friday with a record of 6-7 to move ahead of the Chinatrust Brothers and Fubon Guardians in the standings. The Rakuten Monkeys are the only team with a record above .500.
Rakuten are in a comfortable position right now with a record of 9-2. There isn’t another team in the CPBL that is close to the Monkeys at this juncture. With only four clubs in the league, it can be easy to run away from the rest of the competition. That said, the Monkeys have looked beatable recently, and even in some wins, they got into some close games. There isn’t a plethora of talented pitchers in the CPBL. It’s tough to have an elite rotation, so it’s going to be hard to get consistent results from the pitching staff. The same goes for the 9-2 Rakuten Monkeys.
The Guardians have a couple of quality hurlers in their rotation. Henry Sosa is one of the better pitchers in the CPBL and has gotten off to a nice start in 2020. He was at the center of a bench-clearing brawl against the Monkeys about a week ago. Sosa was pitching way inside several times before connecting with a batter. It started because of an argument over a bat covered in too much pine tar.
Sosa believed the batter was responsible for raising the complaint against the Guardians and he took offense to it. No it’s not common for benches clearing in the CPBL. Sosa will be back on the bump on Friday. The Lions are expected to counter with Chen-Yen Chiang who is looking to get on track after some shaky outings. Fubon Guardians vs. Uni-Lions CPBL Betting Odds:
Fubon Guardians vs. Uni-Lions Prediction:
The Fubon Guardians have been cold after winning their first two matches. They’ve gone just 2-8 in their previous ten games after beating the Chinatrust Brothers in back-to-back outings to open the 2020 campaign. Their offense has been cold after playing well early on. They’re coming off a 5-3 loss against the Rakuten Monkeys on Wednesday, along with a 3-0 loss on Tuesday. The pitching hasn’t been there for the Guardians, but there hasn’t been any run support.
In their previous three games, the Guardians have scored just 8 runs. That’s not good enough, especially in the CPBL where you need plenty of runs to win. Having said that, their ace will be called into duty on Friday. Sosa getting the nod should bode well for the Guardians on Friday. He was successful in his first season with the Guardians, posting a 1.56 ERA and 0.81 WHIP as one of the brightest seasons for a starter in the CPBL.
Not a bad way to start a new career in a new league. In 3 starts across 20 innings in 2020, Sosa has been solid with a 3.15 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Expect him to go deep into this one. It’s exactly what the Guardians need right now after their pitching staff took a beating the last two games. The Guardians’ offense should be able to wake up against Chiang. Chiang is looking to bounce back after a shaky 2019 and has been getting nowhere thus far.
Chiang was inconsistent last season, as he recorded a 5.40 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 95 innings of work. Thus far in 2020, Chiang has been off the mark, with a 9.00 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in two starts. Look for Sosa to quiet the bats of the Uni-Lions, and the Guardians should likely get their offense back into form against the inconsistent Chiang.
