The Hanwha Eagles were one of four teams playing on Monday. They made the most of it and edged out the SK Wyverns for a 4-2 win. The Eagles typically don’t get help from their pitching staff, but it was Jang Si-hwan’s day for Hanwha. He went 6 innings strong with 2 hits and just 1 earned run conceded.
That was the only earned run that the Eagles’ pitching staff gave up Monday. The bullpen handled their business as well, surprisingly enough. Hanwha has had the worst bullpen in the KBO. It’s been a tough year for them, but for a day at least, the Eagles looked right.
Beating the Wyverns isn’t saying much in 2020, though. The Eagles are the only team that is behind the Wyverns in the standings. SK is a horrible 18-41, while Hanwha trails with a record of 16-43. It has been tough especially for the Wyverns who just a year removed from a 88-55-1 season.
The Wyverns tied with the Doosan Bears for first in the KBO. They did nothing in the postseason, so SK really hasn’t done anything since the 2019 regular season. It’s been a tough run for them. Meanwhile, we kind of expected the Eagles to be a bad team again. No major surprises here. The Eagles went 58-86 last season to finish a spot ahead of the Lotte Giants.
It’s possible that the Eagles do one better than 2019. They are close to reeling in the Wyverns, and it could be soon that the Eagles pass the Wyverns in the standings. Both teams have a tough series ahead of them over the next few days. The Wyverns are on the road to play the Doosan Bears, while the Eagles are away from home to face the KT Wiz.
The Wiz have some hot bats in their lineup, none hotter than Mel Rojas Jr. After years of playing in the minors in the major leagues, Rojas Jr. went overseas to the KBO in 2017 to play in South Korea. He’s thriving this season and is the most feared hitter in the league. Rojas Jr. hits the field today with a .383 and 21 home runs. It’s in pitchers best interest to know when Rojas Jr. is due up at the plate. He can do a lot of damage with his bat. Head below for our free Hanwha Eagles vs. KT Wiz pick for July 14, 2020 in the KBO.
Hanwha Eagles vs. KT Wiz KBO Baseball Betting Odds:
Hanwha Eagles vs. KT Wiz Prediction:
The Hanwha Eagles got a great pitching performance from their staff on Monday. It’s the second straight game that the Eagles have held up well on the hill. Can they make it three in a row? That’s not going to be easy against Rojas and the Wiz. They have an offense that can rack up the runs in a hurry. As a team, the Wiz are second in the KBO with a batting average of .298. Rojas Jr. is playing a big role in making the Wiz one of the most dangerous offenses in the KBO. The Eagles are expected to give former Detroit Tiger, Warwick Saupold, the nod on the road Tuesday. Saupold has been average with a 4.16 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 13 games.
Saupold is coming off two iffy performances versus the Kia Tigers and Lotte Giants. He posted an ERA of 8.06 with 10 earned runs conceded in 11.1 innings. In his previous three outings, Saupold has given up a total of 13 earned runs across 17.1 innings of work on the bump. That doesn’t bode well on Tuesday against the quick strike offense of the Wiz. They’ve scored at least 7 runs in five of their last six games, with an average of 7.8 runs scored per contest. Saupold must be on top of his game or this one could turn into a headache for him.
Odrisamer Despaigne will make the 14th start of his KBO career today. With no more calls from teams in the majors, Despaigne took his services to South Korea to play with the Wiz. Up and down has been the best way to describe Despaigne in 2020. He enters Tuesday with a 4.29 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. Despaigne was fairly solid in his previous two starts with 4 earned runs conceded in 13.2 innings. Against the Eagles at home, Despaigne should be in good form. The Eagles are hitting .241 for next to last. I’m on board with the Wiz to win by 2 or more runs on Tuesday.
