Hanwha Eagles vs. Samsung Lions Pick – KBO June 23, 2020

The Hanwha Eagles and Samsung Lions get the week started at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu. The Eagles recorded a massive upset on the road over the NC Dinos on Saturday with a win of 4-3. It was the best win of the season for the Eagles, as they finally got to 10 wins on the season. They reverted backwards with a loss after the win, but they made the game competitive.

The Dinos opened up a 6-1 lead over the Eagles, though that evaporated in the top of the 7th. Hanwha battled back to score 5 runs to tie the ballgame up at 6 runs apiece. However, that effort went for nothing because of the Eagles’ bullpen. The Dinos tacked on 3 runs immediately after to take a 9-6 lead, ultimately holding on for the 9-7 win.

The bats came to play for the Eagles against the Dinos in the series finale. They came close to pulling off an improbable upset in the series, but even the one win was impressive for the Eagles. Despite getting a win over the Dinos, reality hits when they take a look at the standings. The Eagles are a 10-32 baseball club going into Tuesday. That puts them 19 games behind the Dinos and 3.5 games behind the SK Wyverns.

They can maybe get out of the basement and pass the Wyverns, but don’t expect much more than that. What you see is what you will get with the Eagles for the rest of the season. The Eagles will find a big upset here and there, like they did over the weekend at NC Park, but other than that, it will be tough sledding otherwise. They face a Lions team that are playing better baseball compared to early in the season. However, they’re still missing something and likely going to be a non factor to the top of the league.

The Lions are coming off a 12-5 win over the KIA Tigers on Sunday. An impressive performance to avoid a sweep against the Tigers on the road. They were losers by scores of 5-4 and 6-3 before recording the easy win. Choi Young-jin was the big winner of the day, as he went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI’s.

He also had two walks to reach base in every at-bat. Baek Jung-hyun was strong across 7 innings of work, with just 1 earned run and 4 hits allowed. Choi Chae-heung will get the call for the Lions against the struggling Chad Bell of the Eagles. Head below for our free Hanwha Eagles vs. Samsung Lions pick for June 23, 2020 in the KBO.

Hanwha Eagles vs. Samsung Lions Prediction:

Chad Bell has been struggling mightily in 2020. After a 3.50 ERA and 1.31 WHIP as a rookie in 2019, big things were expected out of Bell this season. However, it almost seems like by his production thus far, Bell decided to take the offseason lightly and thought the KBO would continue to be easy. If that’s true, then it would explain why Bell has been so terrible this season so far.

Bell has a 8.44 ERA and 2.11 WHIP, with 20 earned runs and 31 hits allowed in 21.1 innings. That’s all in just five starts for Bell, who has yielded 16 earned runs in his previous 14.1 innings on the bump. In his only road start, Bell got drilled against a weak Wyverns team. They scored 4 earned runs and connected for 5 hits in 3.2 innings. In his most recent outing, he gave up a total of 7 runs and 11 hits in 6 innings. That also included 3 walks.

The Eagles waited just a bit too long to pull the plug on Bell. He ultimately finished with 106 pitches, so his arm could be slightly tired for this one. There wasn’t much explanation to keep Bell out there as he got hammered. His confidence certainly wasn’t going to suddenly return out of the blue. We’ll see what he does for a follow up performance against the Lions on the road today. Choi Chae-heun has been struggling of late as well.

Choi has surrendered 11 earned runs in his previous two outings across 8.2 innings of play. The Wyverns got to him for 6 hits, 6 runs, and 5 walks in his most recent start on June 6. Overall in his three-year career, Choi holds a career ERA of 4.46 and 1.48 WHIP. The Eagles’ offense was heating up at NC Park and there should be a bit of carryover today against a hittable hurler in Choi. We should have enough runs on the board in this contest to get the score OVER 10 at Samsung Lions Park.
