Hanwha Eagles vs. Samsung Lions Pick – KBO June 24, 2020

The Hanwha Eagles will look for a response on Wednesday after suffering a 11-4 loss yesterday. It was yet another loss for the Eagles, as they took their league-worst 33rd loss on the season The Eagles are an abysmal 10-33 on the season. Trying to respond to losses has become the story of their campaign in 2020. The Eagles pulled off a big upset over the NC Dinos this past weekend.

That’s been the highlight of the season for them. It was an impressive win to put on the resume. However, it’s all a bit pointless if they fail to follow up with anything worth noting. Since the 4-3 win over the Dinos, the Eagles have losses of 9-7 and 11-4. They’re more than a mile behind the Dinos for the top spot in the KBO. The Eagles and Lions were playing a competitive brand of baseball last night before the wheels came flying off for the Eagles.

The Lions lit the scoreboard up in the 6th inning for 7 runs to take a 7-2 lead. Note that the Eagles and Lions went in the bottom of the 6th with the ballgame tied at 1-1. The Eagles were hanging around and Chad Bell was pitching well. The narrative sure changed quickly, though. Bell allowed 3 earned runs and 5 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Considering how poorly Bell has pitched this season, that isn’t bad for him.

However, when Bell was showing signs of unraveling, the Eagles went to their god awful bullpen and things got a lot worse. Things went from bad to much worse, as the Lions kept scoring and not letting up. It took 7 runs for the bleeding to stop for the Eagles. The Eagles were able to add a few late runs, but the game was out of reach by then. The Lions might be one of the bottom teams with the best chance of going on a run in the second-half and making things interesting.

I’m not saying that the Lions will, but they seem to be a more well-rounded club than what you’re going to get with the Lotte Giants and KT Wiz. The Wiz just don’t have the pitching to go very far. It will be tough to pull it off, though. The Lions will send out Heo Yoon-dong on Wednesday. The rookie has made just three starts in his career, with a terrific debut marred by a couple of mediocre outings since. The Eagles are scheduled to counter with veteran Jang Shi-hwan. Head below for our free Hanwha Eagles vs. Samsung Lions pick for June 24, 2020 in the KBO.

Hanwha Eagles vs. Samsung Lions Prediction:

The Eagles’ pitching staff has been a trash can this season. They’re not getting by at all and just hoping for the best. There isn’t much confidence that things are going to get any better for the Eagles a well. They are going to continue to have problems on the bump. As a team, the Eagles have the worst pitching staff in the KBO, and it’s not even really close. The Eagles have an ERA of 6.02 in 372 innings. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the starting pitcher or a member of the bullpen, the Eagles can’t get anything going from their pitching staff.

Jang Shi-hwan has been around since 2007 and he’s largely been a filler in the rotation. His best season was in 2015 with a 3.98 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Jang hasn’t had an ERA below 4.00 since that season. Overall in his career, Jang owns a 5.51 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. It seems that his arm is continuing to run out of juice in 2020. He heads into Wednesday with an ERA of 6.89 and 2.11 WHIP in 32.2 innings of work. Jang has given up 25 earned runs in 32.2 innings of work. That also includes 46 hits and 23 walks. The former Lotte Giant is probably going to have problems today, and he’s been absolutely terrible on the road.

In four starts on the road, Jang has surrendered 16 earned runs in 18.2 innings of work. That equates to a putrid 9.25 ERA for Jang as a visitor in 2020. The Eagles might be able to get to rookie Heo Yoon-dong. I think that’s their best chance at getting a win here. Heo was excellent in his KBO debut on May 28 against the Giants. He gave up no runs and 4 hits in 5 innings of play. However, Heo has allowed 6 earned runs and 13 hits in his previous two starts for a 5.40 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. As a rookie there are expected to be bumps along the way. I’d look at the OVER again on Wednesday between the Eagles and Lions.
