The KIA Tigers and KT Wiz Suwon will play the final game of their three-game series on Thursday. The Tigers and Wiz split their first two games, with the winning 4-1 on Tuesday, and then the Wiz returned the favor for a 5-0 win yesterday. They took turns with standout pitching performances from their starters.
On Wednesday it was Odrisamer Despaigne who rose to the occasion and pitched a gem. Despaine gave up no runs across 8 innings of work. He gave up just 4 hits and 3 walks. Im Gi-yeong wasn’t that bad either, but with Despaigne on fire, there wasn’t much that could have been done.
The Wiz needed that win to advance to 8-11 on the season. It helped them do a little bit of catching up with the Tigers, who fell to 11-9 with the loss on Wednesday. I was eyeing the UNDER in that game and didn’t pull the trigger unfortunately. In any event, we still went 2-0 for a perfect day at the office in the KBO.
That builds our KBO record up to 20-13-2 on the season. Along with the two KBO wins, we were able to find a table tennis winner for a 3-0 day. It hasn’t been that bad at all for us during the shutdown, as we’ve been able to profit on less popular sports leagues. They haven’t been so unpopular during the pandemic.
The KBO continues to be dominated by the NC Dinos, who are up on the competition with a record of 16-3. They thrashed the Kiwoom Heroes for a 10-3 win last night at home. The Rakuten Monkeys of the CPBL got off to a similarly blazing hot start, but have since stabilized and are playing an average brand of baseball over the last two weeks. We’ll see how long the Dinos can stay this hot.
The Tigers will send out Yang Hyun-jong to counter So Hyeong-jun of the Wiz. Yang is a wily veteran that has been with the Tigers for all 13 years in his KBO career. He’s been one of the most consistent pitchers in the league and is looking for another sharp performance on the road today. So has not been in the best form thus far in 2020. Head below for our free KIA Tigers vs. KT Wiz pick for May 28, 2020 in the KBO.
KIA Tigers vs. KT Wiz KBO Baseball Betting Odds:
KIA Tigers vs. KT Wiz Prediction:
Yang Hyun-jong has gone about his business nicely since entering the KBO in 2007. In 13 seasons, Yang holds a 3.74 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in his career. He’s had an ERA of more than 4.00 only once in the last six years. That was in 2018 and Yang was able to respond with a strong performance last season. He posted a career-high ERA of 2.29 and 1.07 WHIP. It bested his previous career-high of 2.44 ERA in 2015. Yang has been pitching well this season, and we saw flashes of last season in his last outing.
He pitched lights out versus the Wyverns in his most recent showing. Yang gave up no earned runs and 4 hits across 6 innings of work in his most recent outing. After giving up 4 earned runs in his first start of 2020, Yang has settled down.Yang has surrendered 4 earned runs in his previous 18 innings of work.
In his four starts in 2020, Yang has a 3.43 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 21 innings pitched. The Wiz had no answers against Yang in his last two performances against them. He gave up no runs in 13 innings and just 6 hits. It’s within reason to assume that Yang should be able to pitch a solid game on Thursday against the Wiz.
The Wiz will see what they get out of rookie So Heyong-jun in this one. So is an 18-year-old rookie that is just getting some experience. The KBO isn’t like the MLB in the sense that an 18-year-old would not be playing in the majors at that stage of his career. Young pitchers in the KBO typically get thrown out there and learn as they go.
So enters Thursday with a 6.48 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 16.2 innings of work. He is coming off a brutal performance against the Hanwha Eagles, as he allowed 8 earned runs and 9 hits in 5.1 innings at home. So caught a break prior to that game. The Samsung Lions scored 5 runs with So on the bump, but only 2 runs were charged to him. He also allowed 9 hits in that outing. If the Tigers are motivated to respond after their poor effort on Wednesday, they should get this one.
