The Kiwoom Heroes and SK Wyverns meet after a wild affair on Friday. The Heroes let a comfortable lead get away from them. They were up 8-4 in the top of the 4th, but blew things late in the 8th. The Wyverns erased a 9-7 deficit to take a 12-9 lead for good. Lee Seung-ho lasted just 1.2 innings, as he gave up 3 hits and 3 earned runs.
It might have been a better idea to allow Lee to work things out before pulling him. The bullpen offered no resistance, as they yielded 8 earned runs after Lee exited the game. That’s not like the well-rounded Heroes that we’ve seen through this season.
Having said that, every team in the KBO has bullpen problems. That is the one constant in the KBO. It’s more of who sucks the least versus who is the best, because every bullpen is pretty spotty. If anything, the KBO has prepared me for bullpens blowing games in the majors.
It doesn’t happen as often in the majors, but you obviously run into bullpens coughing away big leads. The Heroes are still in good form with a record of 37-27. They’re in a tie with the Bears for second in the KBO. The Bears and Heroes both missed an opportunity to draw closer to the Dinos on Friday.
The Wyverns got the win on Friday, but still have a lot of work left to be done. It didn’t put a dent in their record. They are 20-43 on the season, so a huge turnaround is unlikely. I think the Wyverns have already dug too big of a hole. They will likely finish ahead of the Hanwha Eagles. Other than that, though, don’t expect much out of the Wyverns.
It is good to see their offense getting going at least. Their pitching hasn’t offered much help of late. They were able to get away with bad pitching Friday, but that’s not sustainable. The Wyverns are expected to give the starting nod to Park Jong-hoon on the hill against Han Hyun-hee of the Heroes. Head below for our free Kiwoom Heroes vs. SK Wyverns pick for July 18, 2020 in the KBO.
Kiwoom Heroes vs. SK Wyverns KBO Baseball Betting Odds:
Kiwoom Heroes vs. SK Wyverns Prediction:
The Heroes can swing the bats well consistently. Their offense knows how to get it going especially against bad pitchers. They had a favorable pitching yesterday and have another on Saturday. Park Jong-hoon hopes to pitch a full game on Saturday, but there is a good chance of him getting pulled out before he wants. Park has been inconsistent with a 5.20 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 12 starts. He has allowed at least 2 earned runs in eight straight performances. The Heroes may have thrown a game away last night because of their bullpen, their offense was certainly on point with 9 runs.
For the Heroes to get back on track with a win today, their offense may have to stay hot. Han Hyun-hee has been incredibly weak for the Heroes in their rotation. He owns a 6.87 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 11 games. Han has gotten swallowed up for 17 earned runs in his previous 2.2 innings. Against the Doosan Bears Han lasted just 1.2 innings, and then he survived 2 innings against the Kia Tigers. In two outings versus the Wyverns this season, Han has notched a 4.26 ERA in 12.2 innings. Along with shaky pitching, both bullpens are expected to be tired after the extended work they received on Friday. I see another final score on the higher side between the Heroes and Wyverns today.
