KT Wiz vs. NC Dinos Pick – KBO July 19, 2020

The KT Wiz and NC Dinos meet on Sunday for the series finale at NC Park. The Dinos responded with a big performance on Saturday for a 6-1 win. They drew 3-3 the day before in a rather lackluster effort by the offense. Koo Chang-mo made sure that the Dinos got back on track with strong form on the hill.

Koo went 7 innings with just 2 hits yielded and 10 strikeouts. Following that outing, Koo has a 1.35 ERA and 0.79 WHIP. He’s first in both measures and first in FIP and strikeouts. As a 23-year-old, Koo is getting the attention of major league franchises. No, don’t expect to see Koo playing in the US in a year or two, but he’ll be impossible to ignore if this continues as a 25-year-old.

Mike Wright spun a pretty good game the day before, but the offense didn’t give him much support. Wright allowed 2 earned runs in 5 innings, with the Dinos settling for a 3-3 draw. A draw is always better than a loss. The Dinos are 5.5 games clear of the Doosan Bears and Kiwoom Heroes. The Heroes and Bears both won on Saturday, so nothing changed from Friday. If you’re new to the KBO, the Dinos are the class of the league in 2020.

The Doosan Bears are the defending champions and must be respected. The KT Wiz can be a fun time to watch most of the time. They are armed with some quality hitters, notably Mel Rojas. Jr, but their pitching staff leaves a lot to be desired. Low-scoring draws isn’t how the Wiz go about their business the majority of the time. They have output offensively, but struggle to find consistency from their pitching staff. That goes for their starters and relievers.

The Wiz will turn to Odrisamer Despaine against Lee Jae-hak of the Dinos. Despaigne should be a familiar name to fans of Major League Baseball. He wasn’t a star or anything, but was out there often enough from 2014 to 2019 with five different teams. His career in the majors hit a wall, but he can still make a career out of pitching in Asia. Head below for our free KT Wiz vs. NC Dinos pick for July 19, 2020 in the KBO.

KT Wiz vs. NC Dinos Prediction:

Odrisamer Despaigne has been holding up well for the Wiz. I won’t go as far as saying he’s been exceptionally well, but decent enough to be average to keep his job in the KBO. Despaigne has a 4.05 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 14 starts. He has been up and down throughout the season. Despaigne has been trying to get into a rhythm, but keeps behind help up occasionally.

His last five starts are a perfect snapshot of that. Despaigne allowed at least 3 earned runs in three of those outings, though in the other two, he was strong with just 1 earned run allowed in each performance. One of those was against the dreadful Hanwha Eagles, so don’t read too far into that game.

Despaine has been out of sync in two outings against the Dinos this season. He’s conceded 7 earned runs in 7 innings for a 5.73 ERA. In his most recent outing versus the Dinos, Despaigne gave up 4 earned runs in 6 innings on June 23. He left the game with a 6.00 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. The Dinos’ offense was just kind of meh the last two days, but I think they can get things turned around on Sunday. They are first in the KBO with 395 runs scored in 62 games.

Lee Jae-hak has been all out of sorts for the Dinos in 2020. He has a 5.84 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 12 games. Lee is one of the weakest members of the Dinos’ rotation. Drew Rucinski and Koo Chang-mo is one of the best 1-2 punches in the league, though the back of the rotation is nothing special. In his last six outings, Lee’s best ERA was a 4.50 against the SK Wyverns on July 8. Otherwise, Lee has posted ERA’s of 10.80, 7.20, 5.79, 6.75, and 8.44.

In his most recent outing, Lee gave up 9 hits and 5 earned runs in 5.1 innings against the Kiwoom Heroes. It’s unlikely that Lee gets out of this game on Sunday without any damage on his resume again. The Wiz haven’t looked like a quality offense the past two days, but overall on the season, they have been good and that was against good Dinos’ pitching. They’re second in the KBO with a .293 batting average. I lean towards a high-scoring matchup in this one, so a look at the OVER might be worth it.
