We have some more KBO action on Friday from South Korea. As Major League Baseball winds down, there’s an opportunity to check out the final stages of the KBO regular season and then the playoffs. Major League Baseball started their season well after KBO got going, and their entire baseball year, including the World Series, is going to come close to the end of the KBO regular season.
The KBO regular season wraps up on October 30 after a ten-day period to make up rained out games. South Korea decided to play a full season and they’re close to completing it without any issues. The best five teams in the KBO during the regular season will go to the postseason in November. The NC Dinos erased a 10-3 deficit on Thursday for a 12-11 win against the Kia Tigers. The Dinos lost Chang-mo Koo to injury, but they still maintain a five-game lead in the standings for first.
The battle from fifth to second couldn’t be any possibly closer. While the Dinos are in control and have cleared the field, the difference between second and fifth is a half game going into Friday. The Bears, Wiz, and Heroes are all tied for a half game deficit behind the LG Twins. Major League Baseball might be done soon, but the action is just heating up in the KBO.
The usually hot handed Wiz at the plate were quiet on Thursday. They were dropped by a score of 4-0 at home against the Kiwoom Heroes. The Wiz went from second to fourth in just one game. That’s how close everything is right now. In any case, it appears that all five teams are going to be going to the postseason anyway. The sixth team, the Kia Tigers, are 5.5 games behind for the final seed. There is still time with 15 days left on the regular season calendar, but they’ll have to make a move soon.
2020 has been a throwaway season for the SK Wyverns. Like most people this year, they are going to throw 2020 in the toilet. After finishing second in the KBO last season, the Wyverns are second to last for ninth in the league. The Wyverns go into Friday with a record of 47-87-1.
They are ahead of the Hanwha Eagles by a few games, but that’s it for them this season. The Wyverns are coming off a rare blowout on Thursday, as they smacked the Samsung Lions by a score of 10-3. We’ll see if they can build on that momentum into Friday. Head below for our free KT Wiz vs. SK Wyverns pick for October 16, 2020.
KT Wiz vs. SK Wyverns KBO Baseball Betting Odds:
KT Wiz vs. SK Wyverns Prediction:
The KT Wiz didn’t get their offense working on Thursday, but will have a good opportunity against a recently called up Soo-min Jung. Following four years with the NC Dinos and getting limited action, only 20 starts during that time, the Wyverns stashed Jung with the second team. To Jung’s credit, he looked good in his 2020 debut against the Kia Tigers on October 10. The Tigers scored 1 earned run on 3 hits against Jung in 4.2 innings of work.
That’s nice and all, but it’s only one start and 4.2 innings. Jung really struggled with the Dinos in his four years there. He posted ERA’s of 6.19, 6.75, 6.05, and 16.39. The Dinos gave up Jung after yielding 17 hits and 17 earned runs in 9.1 innings last year. They gave Jung plenty of opportunities to have a job in the Dinos’ rotation, but he didn’t seize the opportunity.
In one outing with the Wyverns, he was able to impress, though. On the heels of a poor effort by the Wiz offense on Thursday, expect a much trickier game for Jung in his second start of the season. Despite the poor day at the plate, the Wiz are still the third best offense in the KBO with a .282 batting average.
As a team, the Wyverns are dead last in pitching with an ERA of 5.62 through 1179.1 innings in 2020. The Wiz will send out Odrisamer Despaigne to the hill on Friday. The former major leaguer has had a lot of success versus the Wyverns this season. He has notched an ERA of 1.29 with a perfect record of 3-0. In his last performance against the Wyverns, Despaigne gave up no earned runs and 1 hit through 6 innings on September 20.
Prior to that, he gave up 4 hits and 1 earned run against the Wyverns on September 4. Despaigne is coming off some rough outings, but look for him to get back on track against a Wyverns team that he’s had a lot of success against. I will back the Wiz on the road in a bounce-back spot on Friday against the Wyverns in Incheon at SK Happy Dream Park.
