Lotte Giants vs. KIA Tigers Pick – KBO May 20, 2020

The Lotte Giants and KIA Tigers will start back at 0-0 on Wednesday a day after Tigers won in a blowout. The Tigers torched the Giants by a score of 9-2, as they poured it on and the Giants didn’t have an answer. They got started early with a 3-run blast in the bottom of the 1st inning to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead going into the 2nd inning.

That all happened with 2 outs on the board, and I think that was an early killshot that broke the backs of the Giants. The Giants scored a run in the 5th and 6th and that was all in the way of offense. Seo Jun-won left the ballgame following 4 innings of work with 11 hits and 7 earned runs. Conversely, Lee Min Woo went 6 strong innings, allowing 2 earned runs and 4 hits.

The Giants fell to 7-5 on the season, as they’ve now lost four of their previous five games. They got off to a hot start and attracted plenty of Korean Series money early on. However, this is still a club that went 48-93-3 last season for last in the KBO. Did they really improve enough to go from last to best? Unlikely.

The Giants were okay in 2018 with a record of 68-74-2 and I think that’s more of a realistic goal for them. We were on the OVER in the Giants-Tigers game last night and came a run short from a win, though got the push. There were some 10.5’s out there, so some of you may have had a winner on the 9-2 final. Former major leaguer, Dan Straily, will look to get the Giants back on track today.

Straily may turn out to be one of the best pitchers in the KBO this season. It’s more than possible for a guy who had some good times in Major League Baseball. He wasn’t an ace by any means, but Straily had a 3.76 ERA in 2016 and a 4.12 ERA in 2018 for two good seasons within the last five years at the best level of baseball in the world.

So, there’s talent there for Straily that has been able to translate in the KBO thus far. Straily gets the nod against fellow American Drew Gagnon who did have the same level of success in the majors. Head below for our free Lotte Giants vs. KIA Tigers pick for May 20, 2020 in the KBO.

Lotte Giants vs. KIA Tigers KBO Baseball Odds:

  • Giants -1.5 (+115)
  • Tigers +1.5 (-147)

  • Giants (-147)
  • Tigers (+117)
Total Points:

  • Over 9 (-130)
  • Under 9 (+100)

Lotte Giants vs. KIA Tigers Prediction:

Dan Straily is in his first season pitching overseas in the KBO. After failing to pitch well in 2019, the majors gave up on Straily and he started a new life in South Korea. Straily posted a 9.82 ERA and 1.99 WHIP with the Baltimore Orioles last season. This was a year after he was good for a 4.12 ERA, though, so perhaps it was a blip and the Giants were able to strike gold with Straily. He’s pitched in three KBO games and has been holding up well. Straily holds a 2.12 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He’s allowed just 4 earned runs in 17 innings of work. Just one home run has been associated with Straily when he’s been on the bump.

It’s pretty clear that Straily is enjoying pitching against this competition. While the KBO is the No. 3 baseball in the world, followed by Japan, it’s a sizable step down from the major leagues and Straily has been able to take advantage. The 31-year-old will take on Drew Gagnon had a brief stint in the major leagues with the Mets, though he wasn’t able to play for seven years like Straily. Gagnon made spot appearances with the Mets in 2018 and 2019. His time in the majors did not go well, as Gagnon was tagged for a 7.32 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in 23 games. Last season, Gagnon bombed for a 8.37 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 23.2 innings.

Gagnon hasn’t been able to plant his feet in South Korea yet and look comfortable. He sports a record of 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in two starts with the Tigers. Gagnon has allowed 12 hits and 7 earned runs in 10.2 innings. I think Straily is going to be one of the better bets in the KBO this season. The Giants may not be as good as their early season success indicated, but Straily is likely going to provide this club with a boost after a disaster in 2019. Straily and the Giants look like the right play in this spot on Wednesday.
