NC Dinos vs. Samsung Lions Pick – KBO May 30, 2020

The NC Dinos and Samsung Lions will meet for the second of their three-game series on Saturday at Daegu Samsung Lions Park. The Lions pulled off an improbable upset on Friday, as they dispatched the Dinos by a score of 5-4 in the 9th inning. They went into the final inning down by a run and exited with a 5-4 win.

Credit the Lions for fighting back against one of the best clubs in the KBO. Despite the loss, the Dinos are sitting atop the standings with a record of 17-4. The LG Twins are the only team within two games of the Dinos. The Twins own a record of 15-6 and are within reaching distance of the Dinos. The Dinos had a 4-0 lead yesterday and it looked like they had that game in the bag. They let their guard down, though, and allowed the Lions to steal a win in the 9th inning.

That can happen to the best of teams and will happen occasionally during the course of a long season. Drew Rucinski pitched a solid game with 2 earned runs and 6 hits allowed across 7 innings of work. Won Jong-hyun failed to close the game out in the final frame, as he was tagged for 3 hits and 2 earned runs. He just needed one more, but the Lions had other ideas.

That was only the 9th win for the Lions this season. They’re trying to hang in there and are managing to stay afloat for the moment. The Lions own a record of 9-13 going into Saturday. They have wins in three straight games now after a really slow start. Their recent success also includes wins in four of their last five games.

The Lions were slow out of the gates with three straight losses against the NC Dinos. Swept by the Dinos, it wasn’t an ideal opening stanza for the Lions in 2020. This carried into a record of 2-5 in their first seven games. The Lions were a force from 2011 to 2014, with four straight champions in the Korean Series. They haven’t looked like a championship team the past four years, though, failing to qualify for the playoffs each season. NC Dinos vs. Samsung Lions Prediction:

The Dinos are expected to send out Mike Wright who has a perfect record of 3-0 in the KBO. He has started four games and was on fire before running into a bit of a bump in his most recent outing on May 24. Wright allowed 4 earned runs in 6 innings. That was because of one bad inning. Despite an ERA of 6.00, Wright had a 0.67 WHIP, so he wasn’t allowing too many runners to reach the bases at least.

In his first three starts, Wright allowed just 3 earned runs in 16 innings. Overall, Wright has been strong with a 2.86 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in the KBO. He opened his career in the KBO against the Lions and allowed 2 earned runs and 4 hits in 5 innings. That was good to guide the Dinos to a 4-3 win in the second game of the season. The Dinos are 3rd in hitting with a team batting average of .293, and 1st in pitching with a 3.36 ERA. The Samsung hitting has been poor at best, with a batting average of .244.

The Lions will counter with David Buchanan who is a rookie in the KBO as well. The 31-year-old has been up and down, with the first start of his career in South Korea made against the Dinos on May 7, a day after Wright beat the Lions. Buchanan allowed 5 earned runs and 6 hits for a 7.50 ERA in 6 innings of work. The Lions took a beating in that game with a 8-2. Don’t expect the Dinos to blast the Lions like that, though they should be able to bounce back following the blown game yesterday.
