Samsung Lions vs. KT Wiz Pick – KBO July 12, 2020

The Samsung Lions and the KT Wiz will meet for the final game of their three-game series on Sunday. The Wiz are looking for a sweep today after beating the Lions by scores of 8-3 and 10-7. Yesterday was a near collapse for the Wiz. They went up by 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, but it was 4-3 by the end of the next half inning. The Wiz were able to get their lead back up to 7-3, but that evaporated in the top of the 7th inning, as the Lions scored 4 runs. However, the Wiz brushed themselves off and immediately responded for 2 runs and then another in the 8th to put the Lions away.

Both offenses played well, but the Lions’ pitching staff didn’t show up. That goes for the starting pitcher, Choi Chae-heung, who conceded 9 hits and 7 earned runs in 4 innings. It didn’t give the bullpen much of an opportunity, but they gave up 3 key runs late in the game to give away the game. Kudos to the Lions’ offense for clawing back and making a contest out of it. However, when the bullpen does nothing to help out, it’s awfully tough to do much to overcome a performance like last night.

The Lions did an excellent job of getting back into contention this season. They were really slow starters, but have been able to turn things around for the better. The Lions head into Sunday with a record of 30-29. They were well below .500 just about a month ago, so I’d say they’re trending back in the right direction even though the Lions didn’t play like a threat the last two days. One of the main reasons why the Wiz are so dangerous is Mel Rojas Jr. The guy has been destroying the ball and making the KBO look easy.

Rojas Jr. flamed out in the major leagues as a Triple-A lifer, but is finding a new life in South Korea. Rojas Jr. is hitting .374 with 19 home runs. Pitching around him is advised, or at least, don’t give him any easy balls to mash. Perhaps it will take a former major leaguer to cool Rojas Jr. off on Sunday. The Lions are expected to go with one of their more reliable options on Sunday, as they send former Philadelphia Phillie, David Buchanan, to the hill for the series finale today. The Wiz are expected to counter with Kim Min-soo. Head below for our free Samsung Lions vs. KT Wiz pick for July 12, 2020 in the KBO.

Samsung Lions vs. KT Wiz Prediction:

The Lions are scheduled to give former major leaguer David Buchanan a look on Sunday. Buchanan recorded an ERA of 5.01 and 1.50 WHIP in the majors. I faded him often when he was with the Phillies and it worked out well. Now that he’s down a class in the KBO, the hitters he’s seeing here are a lot more manageable to keep in check. Buchanan is going into this matchup with an ERA of 3.82 and 1.19 WHIP on the season.

Other than two outlier starts, Buchanan has been on fire in South Korea. In seven of his previous eight tilts, Buchanan has yielded 2 or fewer runs. Buchanan is coming off two solid outings against the SK Wyverns and Kiwoom Heroes. He gave up a run in each outing, with 2 earned runs surrendered in 15 innings. Buchanan notched a 2.70 ERA and 0.75 WHIP across 6.2 innings of work on June 13 against the Wiz. He picked up the win in that one and will be looking for another solid performance today.

I don’t know if Buchanan is going to completely slow down the Wiz bats, but he will more than likely make it a lot more difficult on them than what happened yesterday. Kim Min-soo is in his fifth season with the Wiz, having recorded a career ERA of 5.40 and 1.64 WHIP. The 27-year-old goes into Sunday with a 5.73 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 15 games.

He is coming off a pedestrian outing versus the Kiwoom Heroes. The Heroes got to Kim for 7 hits, 4 walks, and 3 earned runs in 5 innings. He exited the game with a 5.40 ERA and 2.20 WHIP. If there’s any pitcher on the Lions’ staff that they want pitching to avoid a sweep it has to be Buchanan. I was on the Lions yesterday and that clearly didn’t go too well, though I’m confident that Buchanan can get the Lions back on track. The Lions are worth a look at this price.
