Samsung Lions vs. SK Wyverns Pick – KBO June 7, 2020

The SK Wyverns are beginning to turn things around swiftly this season. A brutal start has turned into some momentum for the Wyverns in June. Down at the bottom of the standings in the first two weeks of the KBO season, the Wyverns go into Sunday with a record of 10-18. That doesn’t sound good, and of course 10-18 isn’t anything to boast about, but if you’ve been following along, the Wyverns couldn’t get anything going two weeks ago. They started 1-11 in their first 12 games. Since a 11-6 loss on May 19 against the Kiwoom Heroes, the Wyverns have been playing much better baseball.

The Wyverns are just two years removed from winning the Korean Series. They won in 2018 and even had a better regular season in 2019. The Wyverns went 88-55-1 last season, but lost to the Heroes in three games to get swept in the playoffs. Their pitching was top-notch, as they had an ERA of 3.50 as a team. The Wyverns have been unable to match that kind of success thus far, but there is still ample time for them to turn this season around and be a major threat.

The Wyverns were sharp on Friday and Saturday, as they beat the visiting Samsung Lions by scores of 4-1 and 6-4. Besides a series against the NC Dinos, the Wyverns have been good recently. They have gone 7-2 in their previous nine outings. That’s more like the Wyverns team that was playing in 2019. The Wyverns are ahead of the Hanwha Eagles by 3.5 games to stay out of the basement in the KBO. They’re just a game back of the KT Wiz and 2.5 games back of the Lions.

They will be looking for a sweep on Sunday against the Lions. The Samsung Lions are 12-17 going into the final game of this series. They’re on a three-game losing streak after a loss against the LG Twins and two straight to the Wyverns. The Lions went 60-83-1 last season, and I’d say they are on a similar path in 2020.

They’ll give the nod to David Buchanan on Sunday. He’s coming off two stellar performances and might be able to build on it against the Wyverns in this one. The Wyverns are expected to counter with Moon Seung-won. He’s on the heels of a nice performance as well. Head below for our free Samsung Lions vs. SK Wyverns pick for June 7, 2020 in the KBO.

Samsung Lions vs. SK Wyverns Prediction:

David Buchanan is in his first season in the KBO. The 31-year-old is better known for his time in the major leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies. If you’re a Phillies’ fan, the name should be familiar. Buchanan posted an ERA of 5.01 and 1.50 WHIP in 192.1 innings in the major leagues. Not terrible, but not good enough to justify using a roster spot on him. Buchanan headed to South Korea after pitching in Japan for two years. He’s had one bad spot this season with the Lions, but overall, Buchanan has been solid. The one bad outing against the LG Twins has skewed his numbers.

Buchanan allowed 10 earned runs in 5 innings against the Twins. However, in three out of five starts this season, Buchanan has been flawless. He allowed just 1 earned run between those three outings, which included 21 innings of work. In his previous two outings across 14 innings on the bump, Buchanan has given up just 1 earned run. He yielded only 3 hits and 1 earned runs against a very good NC Dinos’ offense in his most recent performance. Overall, Buchanan owns a 4.50 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. Considering how bad he was against the Twins, that’s pretty good numbers.

Moon Seung-won got back on track in his most recent start. He did the same against a dangerous Dinos’ offense, holding them to just 1 earned run in 6 innings. Moon gave up only 3 hits as well. This was after Moon gave up 4 earned runs against the Doosan Bears and Kiwoom Heroes on the road. Moon has been excellent at home in two starts.

Both performances were against the Dinos, who have scored the most runs in the KBO in 2020. Moon has surrendered 3 earned runs in 12 innings at Happy Dream Park this year. The Lions are 8th in the KBO with a team batting average of .246, while the Wyverns are hitting .243 for 9th. I think the total here is just slightly too high, so a play on the UNDER presents some value.
