SK Wyverns vs. Lotte Giants Pick – KBO May 10, 2020

The Lotte Giants and SK Wyverns were rained out on Saturday, but they hope to get some baseball in on Sunday. In fact, three matches were postponed, while two were able to get their games in. It was a rainy day across South Korea on Saturday. The Lotte Giants were able to preserve their perfect record without having to play yesterday.

They head into Sunday with a perfect mark of 4-0. SK Wyverns had a favorable pitching matchup yesterday, so that would have been a nice opportunity for the streak to end. However, now they have to deal with former MLBer Dan Straily, who was sharp in his first start in the KBO this season. Straily will likely give his team a good shot at going 5-0 to open the season.

The Giants are an unlikely club to start 5-0. This is a team that was way off the map the last two seasons, especially a year ago where they went 48-93-3 for their first worst season since the early 2000’s. It would be the most unlikely champion in the league if the Giants were to turn this season into a Korean Series championship. Despite starting 4-0, they are still up against really long odds.

Their last championship was way back in 1992, so it’s been a long minute since the Giants have been able to celebrate a Korean championship. A nice step in the right direction would be getting back to what they did in 2017 when they finished 80-62-2. Following that season, the Giants tailed off and finished 68-74 and 48-93 in the next two seasons. Straily could play a big role in getting the Giants back on track.

SK Wyverns are off to a 1-3 start with a win against Hanwha by a score of 5-2 in Game No. 2 of 2020. In the series opener against the Giants, they fell victim to a hotter offense, which was able to edge out SK, 9-8, in extra innings. If the Giants’ bats stay that hot on Sunday, then it might be another loss for SK Wyverns as they have to deal with Straily. Head below for our free SK Wyverns vs. Lotte Giants pick in the KBO for May 10, 2020. Note that first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 a.m. EST. Happy Mother’s Day and I hope everyone is staying safe out there.

SK Wyverns vs. Lotte Giants Prediction:

The Lotte Giants’ offense has been cooking recently. SK Wyverns have to hope that the day off yesterday because of the rain cooled them off. The Giants head into Sunday with at least 7 runs scored in each of their four games. They’ve netted an average of 8 runs scored per game.

They’re not going to be able to keep that pace up all season, but the Giants have to ride the hot hand while it lasts. Pack on as many wins as they can now while times are good. It’s unlikely that they have the talent to stay atop the standings throughout the season. However, the Giants have a really good chance to move to 5-0 with Straily on the bump on Mother’s Day.

Straily spent eight years in the major leagues. If you follow Major League Baseball, you should be familiar with who Straily is. The 31-year-old was adequate and was better than adequate early in his career with the Athletics and in 2016 with the Reds. Straily notched a career-high ERA of 3.76 and 1.18 WHIP in 34 appearances that year.

Even going up to 2018, where Straily posted a 4.12 ERA with the Marlins, he was a reliable option in a rotation. A lot changed in 2019 for Straily, though, as he was rocked for a 9.82 ERA and 1.99 WHIP in 8 starts. That earned him a trip to South Korea to play with the Lotte Giants in 2020. Across his career, Straily posted a 4.56 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in the major leagues.

In Straily’s first outing in the KBO, he was rock solid with a 3.18 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 5.2 innings. Straily gave up 2 earned runs and just 3 hits for an impressive debut in Asia. He should continue to find success at this level of play. It’s a big downgrade from big league hitters.

Kim Tae-hoon will be making his first start since 2018. He appeared exclusively out of the bullpen in 2019 and was solid, posting a 3.88 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. In his nine-year KBO career, Kim owns a 4.56 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. How he reacts to a bigger workload as a starting pitcher today is questionable. He will unlikely be unable to outduel Straily in this spot. Look for the Giants to win and get off to a 5-0 start in 2020.
