SK Wyverns vs. Samsung Lions Pick – KBO July 1, 2020

The Samsung Lions notched a textbook 4-1 win over the SK Wyverns on Tuesday at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu. Choi Chae-heung was magnificent for the Lions, as he allowed just 4 hits and no earned runs across 6 innings of ball. When the mound is hot for the Lions, they are in their element and how they win most of their games.

High-scoring back and forth matchups is not their identity at all. Clean pitching performances like we saw yesterday from the Lions is how they go about business. With the win, the Lions jumped up to get their heads above .500 to 25-24 on the season. They started out really slow, but are beginning to show signs of progression.

The Lions have won three of their previous games, and are looking up compared to early in their 2020 campaign. I’m not going to say the Lions are ready to compete with the top threats in the KBO, but eking into the playoffs is going to be there for them. Whether they take the opportunity and run with it is up to them. The Lions are currently a game back of the KIA Tigers and 3.5 back of the Doosan Bears for fourth.

That puts the Lions in a fairly comfortable position, and they have a couple more matchups against the lowly Wyverns on their plate. The Wyverns are in danger of falling all the way behind the Hanwha Eagles who’ve been terrible this season. They head into Wednesday with a record of 14-34, which has them just 2 games up on the Eagles. To avoid embarrassment, it’d be advised to stay a step ahead of the Eagles.

The Wyverns were major players in the 2019 season and could easily go to first to last in just one year. They were in a two-way tie with the Doosan Bear for the top spot in the regular season at 88-55-1. The Bears advanced to win the Korean Series, while the Wyverns had a disappointing exit against the Kiwoom Heroes in straight games for a 3-0 sweep.

The Wyverns haven’t recovered yet from the loss they had against the Heroes. They’ll send out Moon Seung-won for the start on Wednesday at Samsung Lions Park. Former Philadelphia Phillie, David Buchanan, is expected to get the nod at home against the Wyverns. Head below for our free SK Wyverns vs. Samsung Lions pick for July 1, 2020.

SK Wyverns vs. Samsung Lions Prediction:

Moon Seung-won has been in good form for the Wyverns in 2020. Moon has posted an ERA of 3.23 and 1.13 WHIP. He’s continuing his trend up from last season. Moon recorded a career-high ERA of 3.88 and 1.13 WHIP with his best year since entering the KBO in 2012. It’s the first season that Moon had his ERA below 4.00. Moon is on his way to breaking his career-high from last season and has been red-hot recently.

He has not allowed a run in two games, which is across 13 innings of work. It wasn’t against creampuff offenses either. Moon neutralized the Kiwoom Heroes for no runs and a 0.67 WHIP, and then did the same against the Doosan Bears with no runs and a 0.86 WHIP. Those are two of the best offenses in the KBO. Going further back, Moon has not allowed greater than 2 runs since May 27, which was six starts ago.

He is going to give the Wyverns a good chance of bouncing out of their funk on Wednesday. Buchanan is coming off a brutal performance against the Hanwha Eagles, though I’d be surprised if he doesn’t respond with a nice showing today. In his first start against the Wyverns this season, Buchanan gave up no runs and just 4 hits across 6 innings of play.

Leading up to that bad outing against the Eagles, Buchanan hadn’t allowed more than 2 runs in five straight performances. Overall, he has a 4.53 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, with two bad games against the LG Twins and Eagles skewing his numbers. After getting drilled against the Twins early in the season, Buchanan came back to go 7 innings without yielding a run versus the Bears. I could see something similar playing out today. He may not hold the Wyverns to no runs, but Buchanan likely gets back on track in this one. I have this as a 4-3 final, so the UNDER looks good.
