Uni Lions vs. Chinatrust Brothers Pick – CPBL April 17, 2020

Starting Pitchers:

  • Jiang Chenyan (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
  • Esmil Rogers (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

The Uni Lions will look to quickly erase memories of a bad day on Thursday against the Rakuten Monkeys. It started off well, as the Lions took an early lead with a solo shot in the 1st inning. However, Yi-Cheng Mang was able to settle in and control the contest. Rakuten is not an easy offense to contain, and the Uni Lions had no answer from their starter, Donn Roach, who was bombed for 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings.

Nor did the bullpen, which yielded 8 earned runs after Roach left the game. The end result was a blowout loss of 15-2. It was the second loss of the year for the Lions, as they advanced to 1-2 on the season. Their lone win was in the opener against Chinatrust Brothers on Sunday by a score of 4-1. Uni Lions will be looking for their second win of the season against Chinatrust. Both losses were against the Rakuten Monkeys the last two days.

Despite getting blown out 15-2, Uni fought hard in a 9-8 loss the day before. They just fell a bit short in extra innings, but at least they showed some fight. The offense was alive on Wednesday and nowhere to be found the next day. With Roach struggling out of the gate, it wasn’t going to matter, though. The Chinatrust Brothers are looking for their first Taiwan Series championship since 2010. They finished with a decent mark of 62-56-2 in 2019.

That was a huge improvement from the previous season, where they notched a mark of 48-71-1. It was the first season since 2016 that they finished above .500. There’s a good chance they see even more progress in 2020. If newcomer Esmil Rogers can provide a boost, they could be in a good position. Rogers will be making his debut with Chinatrust on Friday. Jian Chenyan is expected to get the nod for the Uni Lions. Head below for our free Uni Lions vs. Chinatrust Brothers pick for April 17, 2020.

Uni Lions vs. Chinatrust Brothers Prediction:

Esmil Rogers might be a familiar name to New York Yankees’ fans. He also spent time with the Rockies, Blue Jays, and Indians. Rogers ended his Major League career in 2015 with a record of 19-22 and 5.59 ERA. He left for the KBO thereafter, and did well in 2018 with a record of 5-4 and 3.80 ERA. His last stop with a team was in Mexico playing winter league ball and he was particularly impressive. Rogers made 11 appearances and was effective, having posted a 2.34 ERA and 1.020 WHIP.

This will be the first stint for Rogers in the CPBL. It might be tougher than he thinks, but it was a good sign to see him pitching well in the KBO. His effort in the winter league in Mexico was a great sign as well. He isn’t going to get pitted against an elite pitcher on the other side. Jiang Chenyan recorded a 5.40 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 2019. A steep drop from a 3.46 ERA and 1.30 WHIP the previous season, but it is consistent with his career ERA of 5.07 ERA and 1.52 WHIP.

Chenyan appears in three warm up games prior to the regular season. There was nothing to like, as he posted a 6.17 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in 11.2 innings. For Rogers, he was sharp with a 2.57 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in one warm up outing across 7 innings of work. He should be able to handle an average Uni offense on Friday. That should be the difference in this one, as the Lions might have a bit of a hangover after getting KO’d yesterday. I’d consider selecting the Chinatrust Brothers here. The odds are all over the place in this match, so be sure to line shop.
