Uni-Lions vs. Fubon Guardians Pick – CPBL May 8, 2020

The CPBL continues on Friday with a couple of scheduled matches. One of which is difficult to find online to bet on. Several of the major sportsbooks are not offering odds for the Chinatrust Brothers and Rakuten Monkeys, so you’re going to have to look deep or wait it out until they post odd, which will likely occur closer to the first pitch. That might only happen until in-game betting is available if they’re worried about too much exposure to the Monkeys.

They have to be getting a lot of Monkeys’ money and getting killed in the process. We were able to jump on the Monkeys’ train again yesterday and they delivered. It looked iffy for a minute, as a 6-0 lead was coughed up. However, the Monkeys got right back on their horse and exploded offensively for a 15-6 win.

The Monkeys have won 16-11, 9-3, and 15-6 their previous three games. They’ll look to continue their hot ways against the Chinatrust Brothers this weekend. Meanwhile, the Fubon Guardians hope for better results against the Uni-Lions. The Guardians have slipped to 6-10 on the season for last in the CPBL. Rakuten continues to fly over the competition, as they extended their league-best record to 12-3 on Thursday.

The Uni-Lions approach their series against the Guardians looking to get on track. They head into Friday on a four-game losing streak following an 18-8 loss versus the Chinatrust Brothers on Wednesday. The Uni-Lions had a much needed day off to try and rest their arms in the bullpen.

They probably need more than a day off to get their arms right, though. The Uni-Lions pitching staff has been taking a beating and need Ryan Feierabend to carry them deep into this one. Going into Friday, Feieraband has been unable to get anything going for himself on the bump. He will be making his fifth start of the season against the Guardians today. The Guardians are expected to counter with Yu Ting-Wei on Friday. Head below for our free Uni-Lions vs. Fubon Guardians pick for May 8, 2020 in the CPBL.

Uni-Lions vs. Fubon Guardians Prediction:

The key to victory for the Uni-Lions is going to be Ryan Feieraband going deep in this ballgame. If he falls apart early, they’re going to have to turn to their bad bullpen, and it isn’t like Feieraband has been stellar thus far in 2020. He needs to get things going on Friday. Feierabend goes into Friday with an ERA of 6.43 and 1.76 WHIP in four straight across 21 innings of work. When he does start to show signs of wear, it’s not like the Uni-Lion can turn to some lockdown arm in the bullpen. They’re going to have to go through a unit that has been having problems.

Feieraband made a start with the Blue Jays last season and an appearance out of the bullpen. Toronto was desperate for arms and was forced into giving Feierabend a chance on the bump. He didn’t make the most out of his opportunity, as he got hammered for a 11.12 ERA and 11 hits in just 5.2 innings of work. Feierabend left the Blue Jays with a 2.12 WHIP as well.

The 34-year-old veteran, who made his debut in the majors in 2006 and made it to 2008, then got spot outings in 2014 and 2019, has a career ERA of 7.34 and 1.82 WHIP in the major leagues. He also struggled to find traction in AA and AAA ball last season, with a 18.00 ERA in New Hampshire and 5.53 ERA in Buffalo. That got him a trip to Taiwan and a spot with the Uni-Lions of the CPBL. His struggles have continued and likely going to run into issues on Friday. It’s likely going to leave the brunt of the work up to a porous Lions’ bullpen.

Fubon will send out a more reliable starter for Friday’s festivities, but can be hit and miss. Yu Ting-Wei has posted a 4.67 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in three starts in 2020. He owns a career ERA of 4.32 and 1.58 WHIP, so his numbers this season are fairly consistent. After having to deal with the Monkeys last night, the Guardians’ bullpen is not expected to be in top form on Friday. Their arms should be awfully exhausted and worn out. With that in mind, there should be plenty of offense in this CPBL matchup.
