Today might be the day that we finally get some CPBL baseball. After getting rained out five days in a row, there appears to be a window of good weather on Sunday to play baseball. Two games are on the schedule, with the Fubon Guardians and Chinatrust Brothers in action, while the Uni-Lions and Rakuten Monkeys are expected to meet at Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium on Sunday.
The Monkeys continue to lead the CPBL by a comfortable margin with a record of 16-6 over the Brothers. The Monkeys are the only club in the CPBL above .500. Chinatrust is the next closest with a record of 12-13, so there isn’t much competition for the Monkeys in the standing at the moment.
It’s a wide-open race for 2nd in the CPBL. Getting to the Taiwan Series with the 2nd seed might be the best route to take to win the championship. It might require an upset, but upsets happen, and the Monkeys aren’t unbeatable. In fact, we’ve seen them begin to slow down a bit since the red-hot opening stretch.
The Monkeys were -3.5 favorites in a couple of games, as money continued to pour in. Oddsmakers had no other options but to raise the odds on the Monkeys until they cooled off a bit. They could just as easily get hot again and start to destroy teams again, though. The Monkeys might have been getting just a bit bored with torching pitchers left and right.
They’ve lost two of their previous three games, with a loss against Uni-Lions and Fubon Guardians. Prior to going on this bad weather break, the Monkeys were losers by a score of 9-7 against the Guardians. The break may help them get back on track, but we’ll see where it goes against the Uni-Lions on Sunday. Don’t get too excited about baseball on Sunday in Taiwan because it appears that the rain is going to be back in full force this week. Head below for our free Uni-Lions vs. Rakuten Monkeys pick in the CPBL on May 24, 2020.
Uni-Lions vs. Rakuten Monkeys CPBL Baseball Betting Odds:
Uni-Lions vs. Rakuten Monkeys Prediction:
Logan Darnell will make his debut in the CPBL on Sunday. He doesn’t get a warmup start with the minor league club or anything. The Lions are sending Darnell in right away to see what he has. Previously, Darnell was with the Somerset Patriots in an independent baseball league in 2019, the Atlantic League.
Darnell struggled with a 5.02 ERA and was able to get back on track playing winter league ball in Venezuela. Both are neither highly regarded baseball leagues, and the Lions are just keeping their fingers crossed that Darnell can chew up some innings. In seven appearances in the majors, Darnell notched a 7.13 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 24 innings of work.
Darnell gets thrown to the wolves right out of the gate in his CPBL career. He will have to deal with the best offense in the league on Sunday. The Monkeys have scored an average of 8.7 runs per game in 2020. It’s unlikely that Darnell will be able to slow down the Monkeys in this contest. However, let’s see what he has in his CPBL debut on Sunday. The Monkeys will give the nod to Ryan Carpenter who has made five starts in his CPBL career.
This is the first year for Carpenter after a career in the major leagues. He struggled in 15 games, with a 8.57 ERA and 1.77 WHIP. But Carpenter has settled in across the world in Taiwan. Carpenter owns a 3.55 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in five outings. Carpenter and his offense should have the upper-hand on the Uni-Lions on Sunday. If baseball is played today in Taiwan, then the Monkeys look like a good option.
