Chances are, if you had Butler penciled into the Final Four, you did very well in your bracket pool. If you had them playing in tonight’s National Championship game, chances are you won your bracket pool. Either way, not many people predicted the Bulldogs to be one win away from bringing home their first National Championship in school history. However, the Bulldogs will be in very tough tonight against the blue and white of the Duke Blue Devils. Led by Guard Jon Scheyer, the Blue Devils have not surprised many, and disappointed very few en route to an opportunity to bring home their 4th National Championship in school history. The Butler Bulldogs came into this tournament as a #5 seed, after winning the Horizon League Conference Tournament, a league that has very little competition within. However, you cannot knock the Bulldogs for lack of opposition, as their last 3 victories have come over #1 seed Syracuse Orange, #2 seed Kansas State Wildcats, and the 2009 National Championship runner-up, Michigan State Spartans. With these spectacular victories, the Bulldogs continue their current 25-game win streak, a streak that has seen some solid defense and power performances from core players. On the Duke side of the ball, Coach Krzyzewski is no stranger to big games, and his core of veteran players led by the for-mentioned Jon Scheyer are the heavy favorite to win tonight’s matchup. The Blue Devils have used their combination of perimeter offense led by Scheyer, Kyle Singler, and Nolan Smith, as well as strong inside rebounding by big man Brian Zoubek. Duke has capitalized on second chance opportunities throughout this tournament, and the health of Butler’s Matt Howard is critical in order to keep Zoubek and the rest of the Blue Devils on the rebounds and prevention of second chance opportunities. Butler vs. Duke National Championship Predictions:
Spread Prediction – Take Butler to beat the 7-point spread in tonight’s National Championship game. Not only do I find 7 points a large spread for a Championship game of any sort, I like Butler’s against the spread number in this tournament. The Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 NCAA Tournament games, and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games. Against the ACC, Butler is also 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games played. Maybe most importantly, Butler is 20-6 ATS in their last 26 games as an underdog. I like Butler to keep this one close this evening, beating the 7-point spread.
Game Total Prediction – Take the UNDER 128.5 total points in tonight’s matchup. One of the biggest reasons why Butler has powered their way through this Tournament is because of their strong defensive play. Conversely, one of the reasons the Blue Devils have been able to put up points this Tournament were due to second chance opportunities, which will be limited tonight against the Bulldogs. The UNDER is 4-0 in Butler’s last 4 games overall, 4-0 in their last 4 NCAA Tournament games, and 4-0 in their last 4 neutral site games. The UNDER is 12-5 in Duke’s last 17 games overall, and 12-5 in their last 17 games as a favorite. Take the UNDER 128.5 in tonight’s National Championship game.
