Yesterday was basically a day off in college basketball with only a few low and mid major games littering the schedule. Today things kick back into full swing with a packed slate of games. Most of the best matchups of the day are early to avoid competing with the NFL Playoffs, so be sure to get your wagers in early this morning for games you are looking to profit on.
Let’s dig right in with a big selection of picks. They will be listed in chronological order.
Noon: Marquette at Pitt -10.5
I know Pitt looked awesome last time out, blowing out a pretty good Georgetown team, but 10.5 is a lot of points, especially against a team that is playing far better than expected this season, as well as a team that they traditionally play tough, close and intense games against. I like Pitt to win at home, but don’t think Marquette is getting blown out. The Warriors are 11-3, and their losses were a miracle buzzer-beater to Butler, the butt-kicking from Florida and the weird Christmas loss to Wisc-Green Bay.
This is a solid basketball team and I expect them to put a good effort. Ten and half is just WAY too much for a team that just lost to Cincinnati at home and at Rutgers a week ago.
Free Pick: Marquette Warriors +10.5
Noon: Duke -3 at North Carolina State
If Duke is going to lose a game this regular season, it is today. The Wolfpack were the preseason ACC pick, but fell off the radar a bit after a few early losses. Now they are back and playing very good basketball. Mark Gotfriend’s team has great balance and will be emotionally keyed up for today’s game.
Mason Plumlee has struggled from the line lately and has fallen off his Wooden Award winner pace. I like NC State to get scoring from all five starters and to ride the emotional crowd to an “upset” win over the #1 team in the nation.
Free Pick: North Carolina State +3
1:30 PM Kansas State -1.5 at West Virginia
Kansas State has been one of the pleasant surprises (along with Oklahoma State) this season in the Big 12. West Virginia is as bad as they have been since before Bob Huggins and John Beilein before him coached there. It looks like a closer matchup on paper than it really is. I like K-State winning on the road in what is basically a pick-em spread.
Free Pick: Kansas State -1.5
