The evening session features some really good matchups. Harvard vs. North Carolina is intriguing as former Dukie Tommy Amaker leads a tourney-veteran team against a superiorly athletic Carolina team. Stephen F. Austin looks to notch yet another upset, this time in the dreaded 5/12 game against slumping Utah. Purdue vs. Cincinnati and LSU vs. North Carolina State should be good games as well.
I am writing this before the afternoon session commenced, so HOPEFULLY we are gearing up for another awesome session of tourney hoops by the time these picks tip…

Today’s Free Pick: NCAA TOURNAMENT EVENING SESSION
Eastern Washington Eagles vs. Georgetown Hoyas -8
Past performance does not guarantee future results. That’s the warning before you buy a mutual fund. Hey, just because we are throwing some dazzling numbers and gaudy returns your way, there is of course the chance that we could, ehm, loseallyourmoney….
So in that light, past stinkbombs by JT3 and the Hoyas do NOT mean they will get dumptrucked in 2015. But I’m not putting any money on them suddenly being tournament gold either. We’ve seen this movie before and it usually doesn’t end well for G’Town. Eastern Washington isn’t world-beaters by any stretch. Sure, they have the road win at Indiana but they also have losses to Montana, Portland State and Northern Arizona in the last four weeks. So, by no means are the Eagles “better” – but they only have to be for forty minutes.
Upsets happen all the time, and this one is far more plausible than it looks on paper. Georgetown has some brilliance in them; the win over Villanova, but they have some offensive clunkers as well and are prone to long dry spells without scoring. Eastern Washington is going to let it fly today and I think they score enough points to at least keep it close, and I’d expect them to can their fair share of three pointer field goals. Expect Georgetown to play with the weight of expectations and pressure today – these guys know the history and many have failed in this spot before. It’s a super-late tip-time for an east coast team as well, probably around 10pm EST, and a sluggish start could be likely and also VERY problematic as the crowd begins revving up behind the plucky underdogs…
I’ll take EWU and the points.
Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks vs. Utah Utes -7
This line surprises me. SFA won a game in last year’s tourney, returned essentially the same team, only lost to Northern Iowa by a single point on the road this year and has won their last nine games, most in convincing fashion. Meanwhile, Utah will have the best player on the floor, Delon Wright, but that has been the case in most games this year and it hasn’t translated to wins recently.
I think this game is a coin flip, so getting seven and the Jacks feels like a steal. This is the kind of veteran, smart and balanced team that typically fares well in March. I like the Jacks straight-up, an am thrilled to get seven points.
