We split a pair of college hoops picks yesterday and both were extremely close. If the final three pointer North Carolina attempted with 17 seconds on the clock; a clean look that had a shot, then UNC covers by a point. It rattled out. If you got Kansas later in the day after the line swelled back to -3.5 rather than than the 2.5 is shrunk to early-afternoon, then you lost as opposed to won. It was that kind of day in college hoops.
Unless of course you are a west coast power (not YOU UCLA, we meant Gonzaga) A pair of potential West #1 seeds both rolled yesterday with Gonzaga going into Pauley Pavilion and having no trouble with the Bruins and Arizona gleefully continuing Michigan’s misery. I stayed off that game because I had a rumbling feeling that Michigan might bounce back with a vengeance and give Arizona a decent game after two of the most humiliating back-to-back defeats in school history. After all they have the talent with Caris Levert and crew. Um… they did not. They lost 80-54 and it is looking really, really bleak in Ann Arbor and the entire Big Ten.
It’s a pretty limited slate of college hoops action today, but there are a few decent games worth at least glancing at. I’ll run through my favorite play of the day on a relatively-slim Sunday slate.

Today’s Free Pick:
Eastern Washington at Washington Huskies -7.5
It’s a cute story. Eastern Washington is off to their best start in school history at 8-1 and comes knocking on the door of the big, bad in-state rival in search of their first win in school history over a ranked opponent and a much-needed dose of respect for their program. Eastern Washington is best known as the curiosity with the red football field, not as a school that can play some hoops. Today is the chance for one of the highest scoring teams in the country (85 ppg) to get some respect.
But it isn’t going to happen. Washington is legit. They are unbeaten and ranked for the first time in a long time after knocking off then-#13 San Diego State in Seattle. Eastern Washington has already had a chance to knock off a ranked opponent this season… and they got smoked by an SMU team that is losing to everyone. The final score was a lopsided 77-68 that wasn’t ever particularly in the balance. Look for Washington to get an edge early to take some of the “upset magic” out of the visitors and to hold on for a double-digit win at home.
