Sean Miller and Arizona are certainly living right these days. How else can you explain the ‘Cats remaining unbeaten after yet another game they SHOULD have lost? Arizona clawed back from 16 down in the second half hosting Colorado, only to lose at the buzzer on a Colorado three-pointer. But wait… upon ‘further review’ at the video monitor, the basket was waived off and the game went to overtime. Arizona won easily from there, 92-83.
The only problem? The video seemed to show pretty clearly that the basket should have counted and that there was no indisputable evidence to overturn the call. Regardless of the equity in the matter, the ‘Cats are still unbeaten and have now miraculously escaped against Florida, San Diego State and Colorado. Perhaps cats really DO have nine lives, but it seems to me this is one unbeaten streak living on borrowed time.
Today is a top-heavy day in college hoops with most of the best games happening in the day time, so let’s get to some early afternoon winners…
Georgetown at Marquette -3.5
Georgetown has only one loss this season, and it was an overtime thriller against Indiana. They own quality wins over Texas, Tennessee, and UCLA. However, they have not faced a quality opponent in exactly a month (the Texas game 12/4/12).
Marquette is 10-3, but have played a tougher slate of opponents. They have an early loss to Butler on a miracle heave at the buzzer, a thorough destruction by the Florida Gators, and the odd two-point loss on the road to Green Bay, which is a little tough to explain. However, that is balanced out by wins over Wisconsin, Connecticut. Unless you consider the abysmal call in this week’s UConn game and realize the Eagles should have probably lost that one too…
Neither team inspires awesome confidence, but I’ll take the BETTER team in this game, the Georgetown Hoyas, getting three and a half on the road.
Free Pick: Georgetown Hoyas +3.5
Miami Hurricanes -2 at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Miami seems to be the better team on paper, until you realize they are playing through a bunch of injuries. Georgia Tech is a sleeper team to make a return to the NCAA Tourney this year, though outside of the St. Mary’s game, they are in desperate need of some quality wins.
I think they get one today at home hosting a banged-up Miami team that has lost two of its last three games, including a game to Indiana State.
Free Pick: Georgia Tech +2
Indiana State at Creighton -14.5
Speaking of Indiana State, they now own the aforementioned win over Miami, a win over Ole Miss (both on neutral courts) and opened 2-0 in the Valley after defeating Northern Iowa and Illinois State – two top-half of the league teams with postseason aspirations. They have taken New Mexico to overtime and played San Diego State to within seven.
In short, this is a pretty good basketball team who is quietly building a bubble-worthy resume. I don’t think they go into Creighton and win, but fifteen points?? That seems awfully steep for a team playing as well as the Sycamores. Give me ISU plus the 14.5.
Free Pick: Indiana State +14.5
