Seton Hall took care of business at home last night, moving to 5-0, and giving us our fifth winning college hoops afternoon in the last six days. We will try to cap off a nice week today with a winner or two – and a quick note – most of today’s games are earlier in the day so be sure to get your action in early if you have any college hoops games you like.
Meanwhile, one of the more impressive wins of the young season came relatively unnoticed yesterday, so a quick tip of the cap to Old Dominion. The Virginia school was a mid-major power in the latter part of the 2000’s but has fallen on hard times of late and looked to be the latest victim of the mid-major conference jumping backlash (see George Mason, Butler, etc.) Perhaps the Monarchs had gotten in over their heads? Apparently not. They appear to be back to relevance ahead of schedule. At 5-1 with wins over VCU, Richmond and LSU they have well-positioned themselves for at-large consideration come March.
The last of the Thanksgiving tourneys wrap up today, so let’s sneak in a few winners to wrap up the week…

Kansas Jayhawks -1 vs. Michigan State Spartans – Championship Game, Orlando, FL ** 1PM TIP!!
The Jayhawks have been excellent since their embarrassing loss to Kentucky in Indianapolis. Their young freshman appear to be settling into their roles and blossoming nicely and, if one can just blur the Kentucky game from their memories, this team looks like a legitimate Big 12 championship-quality club.
Michigan State has also bounced back nicely since their less embarrassing, but still convincing, loss to Duke on the same floor. However, the wins haven’t answered too many questions. They looked pretty shaky Friday night against a significantly outmatched Marquette team. They rolled against Santa Clara, Rider and Loyola (Chi). Nothing resembling a test to say the least. They’ll get their second test of the year this afternoon.
Michigan State is going to have to rely on toughness this season, and I think they’ll get to about 21-9 or so and be a tough #4 seed. They aren’t as talented as some of the elite teams in the country but do have a great coach and great, tough pedigree. The upside for Kansas is significantly higher, and I think that offensive upside edge will be evident this afternoon. Kansas has more guys who can create shots and better diversity of scoring options. I think that’ll get them about a 6-8 point edge against Izzo and the Spartans.
