What an awesome day of college hoops action. Xavier looked like a legit Final Four team in taking apart their crosstown rival in the rebirth of the Crosstown Rivalry (ne: “Shootout”), Florida pushed #1 Michigan State to the wire, Marquette continued the amazing early season for the Big East with a road win over rival Wisconsin, Wichita State looked fierce with Van Vleet now back, taking apart ranked Utah and Jakob Potel, and of course, #3 North Carolina was stunned at the buzzer (literally) by Texas. That one hurt, as it earned me a loss and a losing weekend, but hopefully we can make it back today with a week-ending cover.
Both Kansas and Kentucky struggled a bit more than expected at home, albeit still winning comfortably. Michigan State struggled at home mightily over a pedestrian Florida squad. Iowa State miraculously escaped at home earlier this week and Villanova got boatraced by Oklahoma. Add in the obvious UNC loss, and it will be really interesting to see what the pollsters do tomorrow. Will they move unbeaten Purdue and Xavier into single digits, or do they hold on to the big names despite some struggles?
Meanwhile, let’s start putting some uncharacteristic early season struggle behind me and build a winning streak to match our NBA results.

Today’s Free Pick:
LSU Tigers at Houston Cougars -2
I’ve been burnt several times this season with the LSU Tigers. It is safe to say that Ben Simmons can’t possibly be anymore brilliant. He is putting up stat lines that we haven’t seen in decades. But his team is still losing. As a matter of fact, they have lost EVERY TIME they have left Baton Rouge, three straight times including losses at Charleston and NC State. The one-point loss to Marquette continues to look better and better, but it is still a third straight loss. And tonight, they play a decent team in a true road game.
Houston enters at 5-1 with their lone loss coming AT a good Rhode Island team. However, their best win in Murray State, which is a little concerning. This is a very untested team, but at leat they have blown out all their lesser opponents. Tonight is their first real game, but I am going to stick with the overriding trend this young season, and that is when in doubt, take the home team if there are very points involved. The early season path is littered with road carcasses of big name teams, and I think tonight will prove similarly.
Tune in to watch the brilliance of Ben Simmons. But don’t get caught frustrated waiting for his mates to match – I’ll take Houston at home. LSU has been the worst team in the country ATS at 0-5. The public (and I’ve been lured in as well) heard all the hype around this team and the greatness of future #1 pick, Ben Simmons. He IS great. REALLY GREAT. But this team is still losing a lot and never covering.
