2010 March Madness Predictions – Georgetown and Kentucky:

The Georgetown Hoyas, after slipping in the national rankings late in the year, could still be a threat to make a run coming out of the Midwest bracket in this year’s tournament.  The Hoyas upset #1 seed in the West bracket, the Syracuse Orange in the 2nd round of the Big East Tournament, and marched past Marquette, only to lose a heartbreaking 2-point decision to West Virginia in the Finals.  Still, this is a Hoyas team that has plenty of confidence coming into the NCAA Tournament, but will face difficult competition coming out of the first round in this year’s tournament.  Still, the Hoyas won 4 Big East Conference games in a row before losing to the Mountaineers on the weekend.  Georgetown finished the season with a record of 23-10 out of a powerful Big East Conference, but only lost 2 games out-of-Conference all season.

First Round Opponent – Ohio (21-14)  Mid-American (7-9)

Tournament Prediction – The Georgetown Hoyas have converted 20% of their NCAA Tournament appearances into Final Four showings, competing in 5 Final Fours in 25 school appearances.  Most recently, the Hoyas reached the Final Four for the first time in 22 years in 2007, but fell short to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the tournament Semi-Final.  For tournament success, the Hoyas need to shoot at a high-percentage and rely on C Greg Monroe to be a force in the paint for Georgetown.  The Hoyas will reach the second round, but could run into a solid Tennessee (6) team in the second round, and a hot Ohio State (2) team in the third round, who both could prevent the Hoyas from competing in their 6th Final Four in school history.

The Kentucky Wildcats, led by Super Freshman John Wall, have been one of the top teams in the NCAA all season long.  The Wildcats marched through the SEC Conference Tournament beating Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi State in the Finals in thrilling overtime fashion.  With the win, Kentucky moved to 32-2 on the season, and earned them selves a #1 seed for the NCAA Tournament.  Experience counts, but so does skill as Freshmen John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins have led the way for the Wildcats this season, who haven’t been ranked higher than #5 in the nation all year long.  Kentucky was dominant in the SEC this year, coming out of the Conference with a 14-2 record, as well a Conference Championship.  What boats well for Kentucky in this tournament is they are a perfect 18-0 in out-of-Conference play.

First Round Opponent – East Tennessee State (20-14) Atlantic Sun (13-7)

Tournament Prediction –  Usually Kentucky fairs pretty well in the NCAA Tournament, as they will be looking to compete in their 14th Final Four, and hopefully bring home their first Championship since 1998.  Being a regular in this tournament, the Wildcats have taken home 7 Tournament Championships, as well as carrying an overall tournament record of 100-45.  I do not see a team in the East Region bracket that can upset the Wildcats in this year’s tournament.  I fully expect this exciting and extremely talented Freshmen-led Kentucky Wildcats team to make a Final Four appearance in this year’s NCAA Tournament, likely to face fellow powerhouse Duke in the Final Four.
