It was a heck of a game last night, but an absolutely brutal beat. We had the game handicapped dead-on, Kentucky never giving an inch and hanging around all night long despite being a large underdog and facing Kansas on their home court where they haven’t lost in over two years. So of course, the game goes to overtime and our perfectly handicapped cover goes up in smoke.
It was frustrating for sure, but still a great game to watch, and perhaps further proof that the reported demise of KU and UK might have been a bit overstated. Both those teams look like teams that could make a run in March and do some real damage.
As usual, the Big Ten has saved some of its best action for Sunday, and today is certainly no exception. Maryland visits 6-3 Ohio State who is looking to legitimize their bounce-back conference record and Northwestern looks to revive their evaporating NCAA hopes with a stunning upset at Iowa. We also have some nice ACC action and the game of the day that no one is talking about; Wichita State visiting 18-3 Evansville in a game that will likely decide the at-large hopes for the Purple Aces…

Maryland Terrapins -4.5 at Ohio State Buckeyes
Maryland reminded us all just how good they CAN be earlier this week with their win over Iowa. The Terrapins displayed their diversity of offense and great inside/outside/slashing/shooting balance as Melo Trimble, Rasheed Sulaimon, Jake Leyman, Robert Carter and Diamond Stone all showed out. When that five is clicking, they are as good as any lineup in the country and they appear to be getting better and more comfortable together every day.
Meanwhile, Ohio State has bounced back nicely at 6-3 in Big Ten play after a disastrous non-conference put them in grave danger of missing the Tournament for the first time in Thad Motta’s future. However, their 6-3 record has some real holes in it; they have been absolutely blasted by Indiana and Maryland by a combined 60 points and lost to Purdue by double digits. Their wins are over Minnesota, Penn State, Rutgers, Northwestern and Illinois twice. Not exactly a Murderer’s Row. Against top tier competition, they have rarely competed this season.
Maryland qualifies as top tie competition and then some. They’ve already beaten them by 35 in College Park. I don’t think a change in venue makes 31 points difference. Look for Maryland to be far too much offensively for Ohio State to keep pace with. I’ll take the Terps on the road laying the slim four and a half points.
