The plus-side of having thousands of readers is that you get to have a large conversation with true sports fans and lovers of basketball on a daily basis. We get to share in the excitement and intrigue of the sport, and hopefully stack up some winning picks along the way.
The downside is that every once in a while, you get to look REALLY bad in front of a lot of people.
That would be the case yesterday with a quote somewhere along the lines of “IU is going to WOMP them” and “there is NO WAY Ft. Wayne can guard them.” So…. Yeah. Instead, the Mighty Mastodons rose up and pulled off LITERALLY the biggest shocker and moment in the history of their program, knocking off the #3 Hoosiers in OT, and frankly, controlled the game for the entire 45 minutes. I’m floored by the result, as Indiana had looked as good as any team in the country and IPFW had struggled in failing to cover in their other early tests.
But I will throw myself on the mercy of the Twitter trolls by pointing out I AM still 67% ATS for the college hoops season, so go easy. Please.
Today is a new day, and it is a day FULL of awesome college hoops. The Maui Championship is tonight as well as the opening round of the loaded Battle 4 Atlantis. With so much action is was hard to limit today’s discussion to just one game, but here is my favorite play on the board.

Today’s Free Pick:
Michigan State Spartans -6.5 vs. St. John’s Red Storm – Battle 4 Atlantis, Nassau
I agree that Sparty has been one of the more underwhelming teams to start this season. They followed up a blowout loss to Kentucky with a narrow two-point clock-controversy home escape against Florida Gulf Coast. BUT… St John’s is pretty bad. OK, St. John’s is REALLY bad. Unless Chris Mullin is getting in a time machine and suiting up for the Johnnie’s tonight, then Michigan State is more than a seven point favorite.
St. John’s was one of the worst, if not THE worst, major program last year. They finished 8-24 and won just ONE game in the Big East. They are improved this year in Mullin’s second lap, but still far from ready to compete in the Big East or nationally. The Red Storm have looked better thanks in large part to their the freshman backcourt combination of Marcus LoVett and Shamorie Ponds. The duo is averaging 24.3 and 17.3 points per game respectively, but should find things much tougher today and Michigan State’s defense.
Today is a homecoming for Bahamian Tum Tum Nairns. Expect him to have some fun in the opening round. Things will get a lot tougher tomorrow with VCU/Baylor’s winner awaiting.
