The slow week of college hoops plods along tonight with a third straight day bereft of any Top 25 matchups. We swung and missed last night as VCU unleashed some fury on a down Belmont squad and easily covered despite laying fourteen points. We will try to get back on point tonight. There aren’t a ton of games to choose from, but there is a game I like (but only from a wagering perspective – more on that later…)
There is an odd rhythm to a college basketball season. You have the excitement of November tip-off tourneys and a ton of elite programs testing themselves going head to head on neutral courts. Conference play begins immediately with the new year. And of course, Conference Tournaments and March Madness live up the billing and capture the national consciousness in earnest for a few weeks. But the last two weeks of December limp along, perhaps under the guise of giving players time to focus on mid terms (lol). Let’s go college hoops! Someone needs to schedule a few marquee games this week in 2015 – they’d have the whole college basketball world’s attention and a nice center stage to feature their program prominently.
Ok, off soap box, on to today’s game breakdown…

Today’s Free Pick:
San Diego State Aztecs at Cincinnati Bearcats -2 (Total: 109)
This is the best game of the night in terms of competitive matchup between brand-name teams. But do not mistake this for an aesthetically-pleasing endeavor. Expect this thing to be sloppy with a touch of disgusting thrown in to the mix if you are a lover of offensive (meaning scoring, not ‘to-be-offended’) hoops. San Diego State is fresh off a loss to Washington in which they allowed under 50 points… and STILL lost by 13 (they scored 36 points. In an entire regulation basketball game. And they are ranked in the Top 25).
Cincinnati hasn’t been much more pretty to view. The just played a tough double-overtime loss to Nebraska that displayed guts and toughness and resolve. And 55 points scored. In 50 minutes of action. Bleeecch.
So what could make an affront to the beauty of basketball more pleasing to watch? Making some money on it, of course! I’m going with the UNDER tonight despite the ridiculously low projected total of 109 points. Neither team seems to like to crack 50, and tonight they are going against elite-level defenses. Add in the fact that the better basketball team is on the road, and I like the UNDER even more. This could be a tough-to-watch 53-52 ‘thriller’. Might as well root for the ugliness and make a buck or two along the way.
