2018 FA Community Shield – Chelsea vs Manchester City Betting Preview

FA community Shield Preview

Chelsea have managed to salvage a small piece of their disaster season, which saw them finish 6th in the English Premier League, by winning the FA Cup. On the other hand, Manchester City are coming off the most dominant Premier League campaign in history, where they have earned 100 points and scored 106 goals.

They will meet in the 96th annual FA Community Shield, an exhibition game that signals the beginning of soccer season in the UK. FA Community Shield is an exhibition game which often provides plenty of action and flair to the viewers year after year.

So, who will start of the season on a better note, a tough Chelsea side keen on erasing the memories of the previous season or the attacking powerhouse Manchester City looking to continue their dominance in the UK. It will be a great match to watch.

I have prepared a short betting preview of the most common and favorable betting markets for the 2018 FA Community Shield game, as well as a bit of the history and stats connected to the even. Feel free to check it out.

The first FA Community Shield match (at the time called Charity Shield) was held in 1908 between Manchester United and Queen’s Park Rangers. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and had to be replayed. The replay was won 4-0 by Manchester United, making them the first team to claim the Community Shield trophy.

Since then, the FA Community Shield has been held 95 times, between the Premier League and FA Cup winners. Manchester United are the most successful club in the history of the FA Community Shield, as they have won it a record 21 times.

The game is currently hosted at the new Wembley Stadium but until 1974 the game was played at multiple venues across the country. Stamford Bridge ground in London has hosted a record 10 times before a centralized ground was introduced.

Chelsea and Manchester City at FA Community Shield

Chelsea have made 12 appearances in the FA Community Shield but have managed to win only 4 out of those 12 matches. They have won the FA Community Shield the last time in 2009. On the other hand, Manchester City have 10 appearances with 4 wins as well but their last win has come in 2014.

Chelsea and Manchester City have met only once in the FA Community Shield, back in 2012 when Manchester City came out on top with a 3-2 victory.

Chelsea vs Manchester City Rivalry

The 2018 FA Community Shield will be the 160th game in the Chelsea versus Manchester City rivalry. Overall, Chelsea have been the more successful rival with 66 wins, while Manchester City have won 54 games and 39 draws.

Recently Manchester City have been a better rival though. Out of the last 20 matches between the two sides, Manchester City has won 10 of them, 7 were won by Chelsea and 3 draws. This is still incredibly closely contested and the two teams can surprise each other on any given night.

Expected Starting Lineups

Here are the expected starting lineups for the 2018 FA Community Shield game.

Caballero, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Rudiger, Alonso, Jorginho, Fabregas, Barkley, Pedro, Morata, Hudson-Odoi

The notable absences of N’Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud, Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois (prolonged vacation due to the World Cup) and Willian (minor injury) were expected.

Manchester City

Ederson, Walker, Kompany, Otamendi, Mendy, Silva, Fernandinho, Foden, Mahrez, Aguero, Sane

Manchester City are missing two starters, Kevin De Bruyne (prolonged vacation due to the World Cup) and Raheem Sterling (minor hamstring injury).

Game Winner Markets Betting Preview

The sportsbooks have set the odds on the 2018 Community Shield game in favor of Manchester City, who are an 11 to 10 favorite to win the Community Shield this year. Chelsea are valued at 5 to 2 to win the games, which are the exact odds that are offered on a draw as well.

I find it hard to believe that Chelsea have it in them to upset a Manchester City side which is playing in a much more complete lineup. Chelsea have been hit by multiple absences of key players. Manchester City have also won the last two games between the two teams.

If we add to that the fact that Chelsea have lost their last 4 FA Community Shield matches, my pick is for Manchester City to win at 11 to 10 odds.

The picks

Manchester City to win the match at 11 to 10 odds

Goals and Correct Score Markets Betting Preview

The sportsbooks are expecting a high-scoring game between the two sides as they have set the odds for the game to have more than 2.5 goals at 10 to 13. The under bet for 2.5 goals is valued at 21 to 20. This was to be expected as 5 out of the last 7 games between the two teams have seen more than 2.5 goals scored.

A similar trend can be seen in the markets for Both Teams to Score, where a 3 to 5 odds are offered for both teams to score in the FA Community Shield game.

I also love the odds for Manchester City to score 2 or more goals in the match (over 1.5 goals). The odds are 13 to 6.

The Correct Score markets have gone in the similar direction. The most expected outcome of the game by the sportsbook is 1-1 which is being offered at 13 to 2 odds. Other interesting score lines are Manchester City to win 2-1 at 17 to 2 odds, Manchester City to win 1-0 at 9 to 1, Manchester City to win 2-0 at 10 to 1 and Chelsea to win 1-0 at 13 to 1.

My picks in the goals markets are as follows

Over 2.5 goals at 10 to 13 odds

Both teams to score at 3 to 5 odds

Manchester City to score over 1.5 goals at 13 to 6 odds

Manchester City to win 2-1 Correct Score at 17 to 2 odds

Players Specials Markets Betting Preview

When it comes to Player Specials one of the most interesting markets is the Goalscorer market.

Chelsea Goalscorer market is offering Alvaro Morata as the favorite to score at 11 to 5 odds. Closely behind him is Olivier Giroud at 23 to 10 odds and Eden Hazard at 5 to 2 odds. Chelsea forwards have been in a quite erratic scoring form so my pick would be to go with Hazard, who is the best player on the team and takes set pieces.

Manchester City Goalscorer market offers Sergio Aguero as the main favorite to score at 5 to 4 odds. Behind him is Gabriel Jesus at 7 to 4 odds and Raheem Sterling at 43 to 20 odds. Sergio Aguero has been lethal at Man City and he should pose a lot of problems to the slower Chelsea defensive line, so he is the safe pick here.

The picks

Eden Hazard to score at 5 to 2 odds for Chelsea

Sergio Aguero to score at 5 to 4 odds for Manchester City

Overall, I expect a very entertaining game with plenty of action, which should serve as an excellent introduction into the soccer season in England and the English Premier League which begins next weekend.
