This will not only include match-winner bets for the most interesting matchups, but several special betting types as well. To top everything off, I’ll share with you my personal favorite CL Ro16 value picks that you should definitely explore.
But, before all that, let’s check out the best places to bet on Champions League matches!
Where to Bet on Champions League Matches | Best Soccer Bookies
Finding a place to bet on the premier European club competition is not that tricky nowadays. However, finding a great place to bet on is a different pair of shoes. There are many soccer bookies claiming to be the best ones of the bunch, but most of them are, unfortunately, of rather questionable quality. That being said, if you’re interested in the optimal soccer betting experience, these are the best betting sites you can find at the moment:
Now we’ve come to the business end of this Champions League Round of 16 betting preview! Here, we’ll take a look at six (out of a total of eight) interesting matchups from both weeks of CL Ro16. There are several notable clashes here, so let’s cut to the chase right away!
Most Interesting Matchups-Week 1
In addition to the three matchups explained below, the fourth one is between Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham. Why haven’t I included this one too? Well, this one has a short explanation all the way down below in the Value Bets section. It’s going to be a tricky contest knowing the atmosphere that’s going to be present in Dortmund, but Tottenham shouldn’t fail to qualify after their convincing 3-0 victory in the first leg.
Real Madrid vs Ajax
Real Madrid’s away game in the Netherlands was much more difficult than people predicted. Still, the most important task was done with success – Real Madrid got the win and scored two away goals, heading into the second leg with a comfortable 2-1 lead.
With that in mind, Ajax will have to go into this match with a bit more attacking flair to their game. Their squad is packed with young talent capable of producing the brilliance needed to defeat Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu.
Despite that, Real Madrid is unlikely to lose on their home soil. Yes, I know, their 3-0 defeat against Barcelona this week was a troublesome encounter. But still, the quality of their attacking line, even without Cristiano Ronaldo, is indisputable. That said, I expect Real Madrid to win this. As simple as that. Still, for those of you who want better odds for this match, I suggest you go for Real Madrid to win and both teams to score at +175. Real Madrid’s defense hasn’t been up to par recently, and if Ajax goes all out attack right off the bat, they might very easily score a screamer and give the Spaniards a proper scare.
Porto vs AS Roma
With three wins and two draws in their last five matches, AS Roma is looking like a strong contestant to reach the Champions League quarterfinals. Their opponents, Porto, have the exact same track record. However, the Portuguese side is at the top of their domestic league while Roma is currently sitting at the 5th position.
As far as the first-leg match is concerned, Roma took the W thanks to two goals by Zaniolo, both assisted by the Bosnian legend, Edin Dzeko. However, Adrian scored an away goal for his squad, which could mean a lot for Porto come the second leg. Need I remind you, if Porto wins 1-0, they’re going through to the quarterfinals.
That being said, the second-leg fixture will be a tricky ordeal for Di Francesco’s men. Especially knowing their faulty defense which hasn’t been their strong suit thus far. Porto players will definitely favor their chances of going through in what will definitely be a tightly contested match. It might not be a popular opinion, but I expect Porto to snatch this one away from Roma. I’m not saying Porto will necessarily go through, I’m just saying they’ll most likely win the match. In other words, the safest bet for this match would be Porto to win and both teams to score. This betting option is currently sitting at +280, which is definitely worth a shot, either as a mid-stake single or as a part of your CL accumulator.
PSG vs Manchester United
At last, the final week 1 Champions League Round of 16 betting preview features PSG vs Manchester United. As you all know, PSG managed to defeat United at Old Trafford with 2-0 as the final score. Realistically speaking, this has put the final nail in the coffin of United’s Champions League aspirations. I’m not saying Ole Gunnar’s squad can’t surprise the Frenchmen here, but in all honesty, it’s highly unlikely.
PSG is playing brilliantly in both domestic and European competitions. They are 17 points ahead of the 2nd place team (Lille) and have a match advantage. Talk about domination, huh? On the other hand, Manchester United is playing great in Premier League too, managing to win eight consecutive away games, the first time in club’s history – something PSG has to be very wary of.
However, United is plagued by injuries which culminated in this week’s match against Liverpool. Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial are still out due to injuries, and Pobga won’t be able to play because of his red card in the first leg. Overall, if it wasn’t for these injuries and suspensions, I’d actually bet my money on Manchester to go through. But, when I take all that into account, I just have to go with PSG to win this one. In fact, I’ll probably go with -2 handicap which sits at solid +320.
Most Interesting Matchups Week 2
The fourth match from CL Ro16 week 2 is between Barcelona and Lyon. Even though the first match ended on (goalless) level terms, I can’t see the Catalonian giants failing to qualify here. The resounding victory against Real Madrid this week will definitely put wind in their sails, allowing them to enter the match against Lyon with utmost confidence. As far as the other three matches are concerned, here are my thoughts:
Juventus vs Atletico Madrid
Starting off the week 2 Champions League Round of 16 betting preview with a proper blast. Juventus goes up against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid after suffering a tough loss at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo’s side is at the brink of elimination and will need to score at least two goals (without conceding any) to go into extra time.
That said, I expect Atletico Madrid to play with a stronger attacking presence; if not straight off the first whistle, then surely in the second half.
Manchester City vs Schalke
Schalke was on a good way to defeat Manchester City at the VELTINS-Arena, but Pep Guardiola’s side made a comeback, finishing with 3-2 as the final score with a man in deficit. Schalke portrayed a solid fighting spirit, but I doubt that’ll help them at the Etihad. Manchester City will be hoping for a smoother ride on their home ground, and I for one don’t see any reason the final outcome can go in favor of the German side.
Furthermore, Tedesco’s side lost against Mainz last week in a heartbreaking 3-0 defeat away from home. Their form isn’t near their peak as they’re sitting on the 14th Bundesliga spot, with just two points from their last five league games. With all that in mind, this match should be a walk in the park for Guardiola’s side. I predict a resounding victory and will most likely go with a -2-handicap bet at +115.
Bayern vs Liverpool
The last match we’re going to discuss in this Champions League Round of 16 betting preview is between Bayern and Liverpool. After a goalless first leg at Anfield, teams are now heading to the mesmerizing Allianz Arena where they’ll be greeted by more than 70,000 enthusiastic fans.
With that in mind, Liverpool will have one hell of a match on their hands. After failing to score a goal on home ground, many pundits predict they’ll get eliminated without a single scored goal in the knockout phase. However, we can’t take Klopp’s side out of the picture just yet. Knowing their superb attacking talent and impeccable defensive line, they might as well surprise the Bavarian side just like Leverkusen has in early February.
To wrap things up, if you’re keen on betting on this match, I’d say go for something along the lines of less than 1.5 or 2.5 goals. At the moment, under 2.5 goals seems like the optimal choice, sitting at +105. On the other hand, if you want a riskier bet, you can always go with under 1.5 goals at +280.
Teams to Advance | Value Bets
Lastly, in this part of my Champions League Round of 16 betting preview, I want us to focus on the “Team to Advance” bets which are available on the most popular soccer betting sites out there. The premise of these bets is pretty simple – you aren’t just betting on the outcome of the 2nd leg, you’re betting on the overall result which decides the teams that are going through to the quarterfinals.
That said, you’ll have to take into account away goals which are of crucial importance in these 2-leg matchups. In the case of overall level scores, away goals are the first differentiating factors. However, if teams are level on away goals as well, then they’re going into overtime, and finally, penalties. That’s the charm of Champions League playoffs; one bad match, and you’re in for a tough time.
With all that in mind, let’s check out the teams to advance bets with the best value:
- Borussia Dortmund vs Tottenham – Borussia Dortmund to Advance at +800
- After suffering a 3-0 defeat away at Wembley, Borussia’s yellow wall is definitely in for a shocker. However, knowing the electrifying atmosphere on their home ground, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Tottenham gamble their huge first-leg win. Neither of these teams has been particularly good in their recent matches, so everything is possible in this one. At +800, I suppose a smaller stake is a solid investment.
- Juventus vs Atletico Madrid – Juventus to Advance at +333
- We’ve already discussed this match above, but instead of giving you the same prediction here, let’s take things a bit differently. True, Atletico Madrid’s defense has been rock solid through this entire season. Needless to say, that’s nothing unusual. However, they’ve suffered a terrible 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid three weeks ago, and that ought to show Juventus that it’s possible. That said, with the likes of Ronaldo and Dybala leading the attack, Juventus definitely has the firepower to score two goals against Simeone’s defensive wall. And at +333 betting odds, I’ll seriously consider including this one in my main CL accumulator.
