College Hoops Parlay Of The Day 1-21-22

When you have been as hot as we have been for the last several weeks, you almost expect things to go your way late in games. Yesterday, it looked like we were well on our way to another big day as we had winners locked up on Monmouth (-140) and UCONN (-310) on the money line, totals winners on Saint Louis/UMASS Over 147.5 and UNC Wilmington/James Madison Under 147.5, and spread winners on Seattle (+6) and Boise State (+1). But instead of hitting our parlay of the day plays, we missed 1 game each on 3 different tickets to have our first day without a parlay winner in weeks.

And when you look at the games that we lost yesterday, we had a real shot at scooping everything. Providence was up 18 late in the 2nd half, and they had the 10-point line covered with under 2 minutes left to play before some questionable calls gifted Georgetown a couple of points that they didn’t deserve, and we missed the cover by a bucket. Similar late breaks cost us a win on Colorado as home dogs, as the Buffs trailed by just a single point with under a minute left to play but couldn’t close the gap and lost.

Even our play on Saint Louis looked like a winner most of the game as the Billikens led throughout only to hit the skids in the last 2 minutes to lose outright. What can you do, the bad days just make the good days that much better, and I try to never let the short-term variance get to me too much. As long as you are doing your homework and making your plays on the value side of the action, you are eventually going to come out on top. With that, we will get right back to the grind today, delivering max value, with everyone’s favorite way to play, the parlay! Let’s get started!

Money Line Magic Parlay

Our money line magic parlay is a parlay that is made up of exclusively money line bets. Unlike point spread plays where a team has to win by a certain amount of points to win your bet, on a money line play, all your team has to do is win the game to get you paid. To make up for the fact that some teams are favorites and others are underdogs, you are going to either lay odds when betting on favorites or be paid out at odds for your bet if you take the underdog.

Toledo Rockets at Ohio Bobcats (-180)

We have a showdown in the MAC today, as the Ohio Bobcats host the Toledo Rockets with 1st place on the line. Coming into this season, the Rockets and the Bobcats were expected to be the top teams in the league, and they haven’t disappointed as they are a combined 11-1 in conference play, and this game is going to have major implications when it comes to deciding which team will win the regular season MAC title.

Last year, the Bobcats came out of nowhere to win the MAC conference title and punch their dance card for the NCAA tournament, and when they got there, they stayed hot, knocking off Virginia in the 1st round as a 13 seed. Ohio has been able to ride that momentum into this season, as they are 14-2 on the year, with their only losses coming to LSU and Kentucky. The Bobcats are riding a 9-game winning streak into play tonight, including 5 straight in MAC play, and a win would give them a full 2-game lead over Toledo for 1st place.

For Toledo, the Rockets have played quality basketball this season as well, with a 14-4 record, but they do have an Achillies heel, and that is playing on the road. All 4 of the Rocket’s losses this year came on the road, and while true road losses to Michigan State and Richmond were understandable, the losses to Kent State and Oakland both came to teams outside of the top-100. We are going to have a battle tonight from the Convocation Center, but I think when all of the smoke clears, the home team is going to find a way to win this game.

Illinois Illini (-175) at Maryland Terrapins

Man, do I love me some Big 10 basketball! No league offers more action on a nightly basis than the Big 10, as we always seem to have great games to watch. That is the case again today, as the Illini of Illinois will head to College Park for a battle with the Maryland Terrapins.

Illinois was rampaging through the Big 10 prior to their last game when they got stunned in a 2-overtime thriller by the Purdue Boilermakers. That loss for the Illini snapped a 6-game winning streak in conference play and dropped them down into a tie with Wisconsin for 1st place in the league standings.

Life is never easy in the Big 10, and Illinois is going to have to try and get back on track tonight in hostile territory against a talented, yet inconsistent, Maryland team. Big 10 play has been brutal on the Terps as they are just 1-6, with their only win coming over Northwestern in overtime. Even on their home floor, Maryland struggles to compete, as they are 0-3 in Big 10 games at home, with losses to Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Rutgers.

I very rarely ever make plays on road teams in the Big 10. The league is always home team-dominated, and I am very leery of taking action on a visiting team. I will break my own rule tonight, though, as I see a fairly significant gap between Maryland the top of the Big 10. Maryland just hasn’t shown me that they can hang with elite teams like Illinois, and even at home, I will back the Illini. This line opened up at Illinois (-330), and at that price, I likely would have stayed away from this play, but now that the price has dropped significantly, it opens up plenty of value on Illinois.

Michigan State Spartans at Wisconsin Badgers (-150)

We will stay in the Big 10 for our next play as Michigan State plays at Wisconsin. I am going to put this out there right now, I think Wisconsin is criminally underrated, and I can absolutely see this team making it all of the way to the Final Four.

I am not sure there is a team in the nation that has a more impressive resume than the Badgers do, with wins over Texas A&M, Houston, Saint Mary’s, Marquette, Indiana, Purdue, Iowa, Maryland, Ohio State, and Northwestern. Their 2 losses came to Providence, who is looking like a team that could win the Big East, and Ohio State on the road, when the Buckeyes were ranked in the top-10 nationally.

The Badgers will get a chance to add another elite name to their hit list tonight against a very talented Michigan State Spartans squad. The Spartans have a nice resume themselves with wins over Loyola-Chicago, UCONN, Penn State, and Northwestern, but they slipped up in their last game, with a loss to Northwestern at home, handing the Spartans their first Big 10 loss of the year.

That loss couldn’t have come for a worse time for Tom Izzo and company as they have to play at Wisconsin today, followed up by a road trip to Illinois, then a home game against their hated rival Michigan Wolverines. This is the toughest stretch of the season for Sparty, and kicking it off with a home loss to the Wildcats has me wondering if they are up for the challenge?

I have watched Wisconsin play too well this season not to expect another win for them tonight, despite the high level of competition. Wisconsin is 8-1 at home this year, and the Kohl Center is never an easy place for opposing teams to win. I will back the Badgers in what should be an absolute thriller of a game tonight from Madison.

Game Total Parlay

Game total plays are commonly referred to as over/under bets because you are betting over or under the posted point total for a game. The game total is calculated by adding up the final scores of both teams. If that total score adds up to more than the total, the over bets win. If the total score adds up to under that total, bets on the under win. If the total score lands exactly on the posted total, all bets push.

Toledo Rockets at Ohio Bobcats Under 149

We already touched on this game above, and I see additional value on this game on the total as well. This line opened up at 146 points and has been steadily moving upwards ever since. Some books have it at 148, others at 148.5, and I even found a 149 floating around out there. The public has been hammering the over basically everywhere, and that opens up value on a fade the public bet on the under.

The data is on our side as Kenpom has this one finishing up at 145 points, and again, the public fails to understand the concept of pacing and tempo. Both of these teams play efficient offense, that part the public got right. But where they missed is with the Bobcat’s willingness to play a slow pace, as they are 185th nationally in tempo. Throw in the fact that Ohio is 77th in the nation in defensive efficiency, and you end up with a sneaky lower scoring game. I am jumping on the under.

St. Bonaventure Bonnies at Duquesne Dukes Over 135

This game between the Bonnies and the Dukes opened up at 138 points, which is exactly where Kenpom has the game finishing. But again, the public has disagreed, as they have been taking the under, and this line reflects all of that action, as it has moved 3 full points. This game is going to be played at a slower pace, but the Bonnies don’t waste many possessions, as they play a very efficient offense, 51st in the country, and with this low of a total, if the Bonnies can shoot their standard high percentage from the field, this game should coast to the over.

Evansville Purple Aces at Illinois State Redbirds Over 131.5

This line just might be the worst totals line I have seen all season long. The books know it too, as they opened this up at 137.5 points, which is close to where Kenpom has it at 138 points, but there has been a surge of early action that has sent this number spiraling down a whopping 6 points! I follow these totals each and every day, and a 6-point line move in the wrong direction is nearly unheard of, and I almost can’t believe that I get a chance to profit from this bad move.

I mean, I get it, Evansville stinks. They play slow, and they aren’t very efficient on offense. But I would think that they are going to look a lot better tonight, as Illinois State is all about offense, and they play some of the worst D in the nation. Looking back at Illinois State’s last 9 games, one side of each game has scored at least 80 points in 8 of the 9 games. With a total barely above 130, if either of these teams gets close to 80 points tonight, this game won’t even sweat going over the total. I will high five the public and hammer the over on an atrociously bad line.

Point Spread Plays

In this final section, we are making plays on the point spread. A point spread bet is the most basic of all college hoops bets. In order to cash a bet on the point spread, your team must cover the number. Like a team as a big favorite? You might have to lay a bunch of points in order to win your bet. Think the underdog will lose, but keep the game close? Then snatching up the points is the side you’ll want to be on.

Fresno State Bulldogs (+2) at Nevada Wolfpack

The public is causing all sorts of havoc today, as they have messed this line up as well. Fresno State opened up as -2-point road favorites. That felt fairly sharp, as the Bulldogs are the more accomplished team, as it fell in line with Kenpom’s view of the game, as Pomeroy has this one ending with a Bulldog’s victory. But the public hasn’t seen it that way, as they have been all over the home team, flipping the line and making the Wolfpack the favorites.

This is such a typical public line move. They haven’t heard of Freson State being good in a long time, and everyone has recent memories of Reno being strong from their run a couple of years back. This move stinks of name recognition, and when you take a closer look at both of these teams, you will know that the Bulldogs are going to be the better overall team on the floor tonight in Reno.

Fresno State is 13-4 this year, and they are ranked 56th on Kenpom, which tells me that the Bulldogs are right on the edge of competing for an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament this year. Nevada is just 8-7, and they aren’t even in the top-100 right now, with bad losses to San Diego, Santa Clara, and South Dakota State.

I am never a big fan of road teams in conference games, but Nevada has lost their last 2 conference home games to Boise State and Wyoming, and you can make a case that Fresno is at least as good as both of those teams. I should have to lay wood to back the Bulldogs, but I will thank the public for the assist and instead back Fresno State getting +2-points I certainly don’t deserve.

Youngstown State Penguins (+8.5) at Cleveland State Vikings

Coming into this season, most people didn’t expect a lot out of the Cleveland State Vikings in the Horizon League. Oakland and Wright State were expected to battle it out for the league’s regular season title, but the Vikings have done an admirable job of staying competitive, with a 7-1 record in league play.

If Cleveland State wants to hang around at the top of the conference, they have to win games like this one tonight against Youngstown State. The Penguins aren’t a very good basketball team, but I do think they are a lot better than their record might lead you to believe.

Of Youngstown’s 8 losses, they lost to Northern Kentucky by a single point, Cleveland State in overtime, SIU Edwardsville by a bucket, and all told, 5 of their 8 losses came by 10 points or less. On the flip side, the Vikings tend to win close, as 8 of their eleven wins came by 10 points or fewer.

In fact, the Vikings haven’t played a game, win or lose, that was decided by more than 10 points since early December, a streak of 7 straight games. In a contest between a couple of teams that seemingly always play tightly contested games, I will snatch up the points and expect more of the same tonight. As long as this game doesn’t get out of hand, a cover should be in the bag as this game should come down to the final few possessions.

Saint Peters Peacocks at Niagara Purple Eagles (-1)

Our final play of the day comes to us from the MAAC, where Niagara welcomes Saint Peters to town. This is yet another fade the public play, as Niagara opened up laying -2.5-points, but that has dropped down to where it stands now, with the Purple Eagles laying just a single point on their home floor. These teams rate out very evenly, but I just can’t resist being able to fade the public and get a home team in league play at such a reasonable price.

6 of Niagara’s 8 losses have come on the road or on a neutral floor, and the Purple Eagles haven’t lost at home in nearly 6 weeks, winning 5 straight games in their own building. Saint Peters has played quality basketball in league play, but they are 2-4 in true road games this season, with their only wins coming over Quinnipiac and Rider, teams that are ranked significantly lower than Niagara.

If you ever get a chance to get on the other side of the public and the data is on your side, you are going to want to take it every time. That is what we will do in this game, as we take our stand on the home team, laying a point and backing Niagara.
