English Premier League: Matchweek 27 Picks and Betting Odds

EPL Player of the Year - Salah, de Bruyne and Kane

The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 kicked off this week with Leg 1 of 2, and the hype is definitely real — especially with both English Premier League clubs losing. Liverpool would take a 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid, while Tottenham Hotspur would suffer a 1-0 defeat to RB Leipzig. Can Chelsea and Manchester City make it up for the EPL next week?

Only time will tell with that, but at the moment, we’re entering another weekend of Premier League soccer. On the league table, Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City and Chelsea all hold spots in the top four, with Tottenham Hotspur, Sheffield United and Manchester United all fighting for gains. Wolverhampton, Everton and Arsenal round out the rest of the top 10.

English Premier League Matchweek 26 Review

As far as Matchweek 26 was concerned, it would bring us some good games, including the likes of No. 3 Leicester City vs. No. 8 Wolverhampton, which would bring us intensity the entire 90 minutes to ultimately result in a thrilling 0-0 draw.

You also had an interesting contest involving the top team in the EPL: Liverpool, taking on Norwich City, who is ranked dead last in the EPL. Despite this, however, the Canaries would take the Reds to the brink, all for Liverpool to barely squeak out a win, 1-0 — they wouldn’t hit a goal until the 78th minute, when Sadio Mane would left foot a shot in the goal.

And then you had an outright thriller between Tottenham Hotspur, who are competing for a spot in the Champions League, and Aston Villa, who are in the 17th spot on the table barely out of the relegation zone. Even though the two teams are dramatically separated in the standings, the Villans would hold their own against the Spurs. Tottenham would shoot themselves in the foot at the beginning of the game with an own goal, and would go up 2-1 later, but Villa would eventually tie the contest, 2-2. They would hold them all the way to the brink until the Spurs would eventually pull out the 3-2 victory, but Tottenham wouldn’t grab the win without a lot of their nerves getting shot.

Last, but not least, you had the rivalry contest between Chelsea and Manchester United, and not only was it important for the rivalry, but it also had Champions League implications, mainly for the fourth spot on the EPL Table — the Blues were in fourth with 41 points, while the Red Devils were sitting in seventh with a total of 38 points. But even though Chelsea had the advantage in the standings, it wouldn’t show at all against Man United, especially since nothing went well at all for them. They got two goals called off because of VAR, and then another goal would be denied by hitting right on the post. With Chelsea’s misfortune, Manchester United was able to take advantage for the 2-0 victory, and are still in contention for the Champions League.

Now let’s get to Matchweek 27, shall we?

English Premier League Matchweek 27 Picks and Betting Odds

Chelsea vs. Tottenham Hotspur

  • BETTING ODDS: Chelsea (-114) | Tottenham Hotspur (+315) | Draw (+295) | Over/Under (2.5)
  • WHEN: Saturday, February 22, 7:30 AM ET
  • WHERE: Stamford Bridge, London, England
  • TELEVISION: NBCSN, Universo

Matchweek 27 starts out in a major way, and that’s the London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur taking place at the Blues’ Stamford Bridge. Needless to say, the EPL community will have a strong focus on this game. Like the matchup between Chelsea and Manchester United in Matchweek 26, both of these squads are fighting for a spot in the Champions League, and as a result, you can expect a fiery game in this one. The Blues have been consistently good for the entire campaign under manager Frank Lampard, and this matchup against the Spurs might be able to be something that Chelsea can take advantage of. Why? That’s because of the absence of Harry Kane from Tottenham because of his hamstring injury. On their home ground, the Spurs have a huge amount of leverage to take this victory.

Another reason why Lampard and the Blues should go full-force for the win at home is because Lampard now has his roster in full health. Not only are the Spurs banged up and without Kane either, but they’ve dangerously inconsistent under Jose Mourinho’s leadership, and that has to be concerning on the road against a power such as Chelsea. What makes Kane’s injury even more damning is the fact that Tottenham no longer has the services of Christian Eriksen to back them up. No Kane, No Eriksen, No Prob… Yeah, right. This is going to be a very tough London derby for the Spurs. Earlier this season, the Blues have already taken out Tottenham, and would do so by a 2-0 score — and it would be on the road at that. Give me Chelsea for the win again for an English Premier League season sweep.

BETTING PREDICTION: Chelsea 2, Tottenham Hotspur 1

Crystal Palace vs. Newcastle United

  • BETTING ODDS: Crystal Palace (-106) | Newcastle United (+354) | Draw (+248) | Over/Under (2.5)
  • WHEN: Saturday, February 22, 10:00 AM ET
  • WHERE: Selhurst Park, London, England
  • TELEVISION: NBC Sports Gold

Crystal Palace is currently riding a three-match losing streak in the English Premier League, and they’ll be looking to clean that up this weekend when they take on Newcastle United on their home ground of Selhurst Park. Whether it’s league or cup play, the Eagles are aiming to return to a solid level of competitiveness, so you can expect them to bring the aggression on Saturday when taking on the Magpies. Keep your eyes on Wilfriend Zaha in this one for Crystal Palace, who would help the Eagles achieve a win over Everton after landing an assist with Christian Benteke — Zaha will be key in this matchup for Crystal Palace at home.

Newcastle United might be sitting in third place on the EPL Table, but they’ve been performing quite well for the most part here in the early part of 2020. With the matchup being what it is, you can expect the Magpies to rely heavily on their defense, and as a result, there is a load of profitability with the Over/Under being 2.5, so get those bets in. Don’t want to listen to me? Fine, then I’ll let history give you a lesson: In the last six contests between Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, only six goals combined have been scored in those matches. There’s not a load of offense here, ladies and gentlemen, so don’t expect it on Saturday — and take that Under.

BETTING PREDICTION: Crystal Palace 1, Newcastle United 1

Burnley vs. Bournemouth

  • BETTING ODDS: Burnley (+115) | Bournemouth (+250) | Draw: +230 | Over/Under (2.5)
  • WHEN: Saturday, February 22, 10:00 AM ET
  • WHERE: Turf Moor, Burnley, England
  • TELEVISION: NBC Sports Gold

Burnley saved themselves with a 2-1 win on the road against Southampton, and now they’ll be looking to carry that momentum into the matchup taking on Bournemouth at Turf Moor. They’re currently on a good stretch, and if the Clarets continue their performance up, they’ll remain in the English Premier League. And to do that, manager Sean Dyche needs to keep his players focused and make sure they don’t get an attitude of being content — it could certainly happen in a long season like the EPL’s. In the contest against the Saints, Chris Wood would suffer a hamstring injury, and he’s listed doubtful against Bournemouth as a result. However, this might give Matej Vydra an opportunity to start.

For the Cherries, they’ll be looking to recover this weekend, this after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United. No matter the opposition of Bournemouth though, they have a tendency of being unpredictable which then gives birth to bets with lacking confidence. Still though, even with the unpredictability of the Cherries, I’ll still rock with Burnley at home in this one. The Clarets have built up a strength at home over the years, and it’s tough to beat them there. With this being the case, you’ve got to give Burnley the three points in this one.

BETTING PREDICTION: Burnley 2, Bournemouth 1

Sheffield United vs. Brighton & Hove Albion

  • BETTING ODDS: Sheffield United (-105) | Brighton & Hove Albion (+325) | Draw (+235) | Over/Under (2.5)
  • WHEN: Saturday, February 22, 10:00 AM ET
  • WHERE: Bramall Lane, Sheffield, England
  • TELEVISION: NBCSN, Universo

It’s been a fairy tale season for Sheffield United the entire 2019-20 campaign, and it doesn’t appear that it’s going to be ending anytime soon. Back before the season started, the Blades were predicted by most pundits to be battling it out in the relegation zone. However, Sheffield has another zone in mind, and that’s the chase for prestigious competitions across Europe. The Blades’ manager Chris Wilder has done fantastic with his club, and has them with a ton of confidence heading into this weekend at home. And speaking of home, Sheffield United are ferocious at Bramall Lane, and after coming from behind to knock out Bournemouth in their last match, you’ve got to side with them to take a victory in this one as well.

For Brighton & Hove Albion, the struggle is real for them right now, not having a win in their last seven matches across all competitions. Earlier in the season, the Blades and Seagulls would meet each other at Brighton’s American Express Community Stadium, and in that contest, it would be Sheffield United who would pick up the 1-0 victory. Not only do the Blades have the leverage, but they have the history, and you have to think history will repeat itself at Bramall Lane — and possibly even more in the direction of Sheffield this go around. Keep an eye on John Lundstram on Saturday. He’s been having a glorious season all year long, and could keep that up to deliver a win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

BETTING PREDICTION: Sheffield United 1, Brighton & Hove Albion 0

Southampton vs. Aston Villa

  • BETTING ODDS: Southampton (-167) | Aston Villa (+425) | Draw (+320) | Over/Under (3)
  • WHEN: Saturday, February 22, 10:00 AM ET
  • WHERE: St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, England
  • TELEVISION: NBC Sports Gold

In the match against Burnley, Danny Ings would continue to keep his potency up, but even though they’re getting plenty of productivity from Ings, Southampton wasn’t able to land anything in that contest. As a matter of fact, they would suffer an upset 2-1 loss on their home ground, and now they’ll be looking to make up for it against Aston Villa — and they’ll be bringing the aggression at that in order to pull that off. In their last three matches across all competitions, the Saints would take a loss in all three, however, their play on the pitch has been much better than what the scoreboard has been showing.

On the other side of things, Aston Villa is scratching and clawing to avoid being relegated out of the Premier League — they currently sit in the No. 17 position, just one spot out of being in the relegation zone. On their home ground, the Villans are a force and it’s rough for any opposition to pull out a win at Villa Park, however, they’re on the road this weekend. With Southampton being a bit better in the standings and being home at St. Mary’s Stadium, Aston Villa has no leverage whatsoever this weekend, so you have to side with the Saints in this one. On top of that, the Lions are still without their top attacker in Wesley, so they’ll have to focus their gameplan around Jack Grealish. Grealish has been fantastic this season, so it’s not all bad for Aston Villa, but there’s too much going for Southampton in this one. Give me the Saints.

BETTING PREDICTION: Southampton 2, Aston Villa 0

Leicester City vs. Manchester City (Match of the Week)

  • BETTING ODDS: Leicester City (+343) | Manchester City (-129) | Draw (+315) | Over/Under (3)
  • WHEN: Saturday, February 22, 12:30 PM ET
  • WHERE: King Power Stadium, Leicester, England
  • TELEVISION: NBC, Universo

For the match of the week, we have a power matchup between the No. 2 club on the table (Manchester Citty) facing off against the No. 3 team in Leicester City, and they’re fighting for that second spot being just four points separated from one another — the Citizens have 54 points, while the Foxes hold 50. Needless to say, this is a highly-anticipated battle that’s taking place at King Power Stadium. In Matchweek 26 on the road at Molineux Stadium, Leicester would do a great job of holding Wolverhampton to an even 0-0 draw, however, I’m sure they’re already aware that Man City is a different animal — their work will be cut out for them on Saturday.

Manchester City enters this matchup not just on the road, but also following the reports of their ban from the Champions League. With this being the case, there may be confidence leaking out of the Sky Blues machine, however, they still have a load of talent that can attack and score. Therefore, you’ve got to count on Manchester City to put in some goals this weekend, despite being at Leicester’s King Power Stadium. And speaking of King Power Stadium, the Foxes are very tough to defeat there, and on their ground, they should be able to keep up with the potency of City — count on both clubs to put up some goals in this one. It should be a pretty even matchup in this one, despite Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury being out of action due to a suspension after being sent off against Wolverhampton last weekend.

BETTING PREDICTION: Leicester City 2, Manchester City 2

Manchester United vs. Watford

  • BETTING ODDS: Manchester United (-167) | Watford (+500) | Draw (+300) | Over/Under (2.5)
  • WHEN: Sunday, February 23, 9:00 AM ET
  • WHERE: Old Trafford, Manchester, England
  • TELEVISION: NBCSN, Telemundo

Last weekend, Manchester United was under pressure to keep their top-four dreams alive, and they would deliver with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea. Here in Matchweek 27, the pressure is once again on the Red Devils to get a win, this time against Watford. For Man United, they’ve definitely had their fair share of struggles this season, but they should be able to pull out a victory over the Hornets, and not only because they’re at home, but also because of Watford being a relegation battler — they’re sitting at No. 19 on the EPL table. Even without their star attacker Marcus Rashford due to injury, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and company should be able to take the win at Old Trafford.

For Watford, it isn’t all bad. Ever since their new manager Nigel Pearson would take over the team, the Hornets have been showcasing better and better performances with each passing week. However, their road performances are still lacking, and with their struggles as a visitor, you’ve got to take Manchester United in this one — a lot of value with the Red Devils in this bet, so go ahead and place your cash on them. Man United will have to contain Gerard Deulofeu in order to avoid any disasters, however. Recently, Deulofeu has been in excellent form.

BETTING PREDICTION: Manchester United 2, Watford 1

Wolverhampton vs. Norwich City

  • BETTING ODDS: Wolverhampton (-188) | Norwich City (+550) | Draw (+320) | Over/Under (2.5)
  • WHEN: Sunday, February 23, 9:00 AM ET
  • WHERE: Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton, England
  • TELEVISION: CNBC, NBC App

Playing power Leicester City in Matchweek 26, Wolverhampton would hold them to a 0-0 draw, and this weekend when they take on Norwich City at their Molineux Stadium, they’ll be looking to get their club back on a winning track. With their recent form, the Wolves have put up some solid performances, and they have motivation to continue their winning ways. If they take the victory over the Canaries, they’ll remain in the race to grab a spot to partake in European competitions.

Norwich City will have their hands full with Wolverhampton’s Raul Jimenez, who has been putting up great numbers in the 2019-20 campaign — it’ll be a tough test for the Canaries’ defense, for sure. But maybe they can handle it after their match last weekend, where they would play very well against Liverpool and would just suffer a 1-0 defeat to the current leaders of the English Premier League. With that being said though, Norwich is pretty lousy on the road and there’s no value on them in this game at all. Instead, it all leans in the direction of Nuno Espirito Santo and Wolverhampton. And it gets even better for the Wolves: All of their key talent is healthy and will be in action this weekend. Watch out, Norwich City.

BETTING PREDICTION: Wolverhampton 2, Norwich City 0

Arsenal vs. Everton

  • BETTING ODDS: Arsenal (+102) | Everton (+255) | Draw (+255) | Over/Under (2.5)
  • WHEN: Sunday, February 23, 11:30 AM ET
  • WHERE: Emirates Stadium, London, England
  • TELEVISION: NBCSN, Telemundo

The matchup between Arsenal and Everton is sure to be one of the most fascinating games of Sunday, with the Gunners holding the leverage being home at Emirates Stadium. Before the season started, it was predicted that Arsenal would have a very productive season, but those expectations haven’t been met at all throughout the campaign. However, it’s still too early for us to make a call on the Gunners, as they could eventually recover with the talent on their roster. And with the spirit of this club led by Mikel Arteta, you’ll know they’ll do everything in their power to try and lock up a spot in the top four.

Per usual, the man that Everton needs to contain in order to pull off the upset is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Last weekend in a 4-0 victory against Newcastle United, Aubameyang would score himself a goal, so he comes in with top-notch form. Since Carlo Ancelotti has taken over at the manager role, the Toffees have been putting up some nice performances, and with both clubs having the ability to score, you can definitely count on both clubs to hit at least a goal in this one. For Everton, they have a star themselves that Arsenal needs to contain, and that’s the power of Richarlison, who has been scoring goals left and right as of late — and you can bet that the Gunners’ back-line will be on him like flies on cow pies. Earlier this season, both Arsenal and Everton would play a 0-0 draw, but this time around, things could get a little wild with the recent potency of both clubs.

BETTING PREDICTION: Arsenal 2, Everton 2

Liverpool vs. West Ham United

  • BETTING ODDS: Liverpool (-600) | West Ham United (+1800) | Draw (+650) | Over/Under (3.5)
  • WHEN: Monday, February 24, 9:00 PM ET
  • WHERE: Anfield, Liverpool, England
  • TELEVISION: NBCSN, Universo

Last weekend, Liverpool would suffer near disaster against Norwich City, but would pull out the 1-0 victory. Now, the Reds will be looking to get things back in order on Monday Night Football when they square off against West Ham United at Anfield. Against the Canaries, Sadio Mane would come off of the bench to score the winning goal for Liverpool, so without a doubt he’ll be back in the starting XI in Matchweek 27. It’s obvious that his injury is no longer relevant, and he’ll be able to team back up with Mohamed Salah on the pitch, which is scary as hell for any opposition to face off against.

For Jurgen Klopp and the Reds, they’re looking to clinch the English Premier League championship as soon as they can. With this being the case, you can expect Liverpool to go full force against West Ham. As far as the Hammers are concerned, they’re having a pretty dismal season here in 2019-20, and I’m not expecting them to do any damage whatsoever to the Reds. Earlier in the campaign when they would square off, Liverpool would take the 2-0 win at London Stadium, so I predict they have an even more dominating performance on their home ground.

BETTING PREDICTION: Liverpool 3, West Ham United 0
