Every ten games or so throughout the NBA season, I write about how each NBA team is doing against the spread. I take the spreads off of BetOnline before each game occurs later that day. I keep track of their record against the spread to help bettors understand the best teams to bet on against the spread.
The NBA season is closing in on the quarter mark of the season. Most NBA teams have reached the 20 game mark of the season after Tuesday night’s games. The Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, and Dallas Mavericks have yet to reach the 20 game point. There are still quite a few questionable teams in the standings, but overall the top teams and bottom teams are beginning to create some distance from each other.
New York Knicks
New York is a surprising team to see at the top of this list. The Knicks have started out the season with a 7-15 record. Against the spread though, New York has gone 13-8-1. The Knicks are underdogs in most of their games, but this allows them to cover the extreme spreads that they are put up against. New York may not be able to find ways to win most of their games, but they keep it close.
The Mavericks are another team that has not done great in the official NBA standings, but have been solid as far as betting goes. Dallas has gone 9-9, which is not bad, but in the Western Conference an even record will likely not get them into the playoffs. The Mavericks have gone 12-6 against the spread though.
The Memphis Grizzlies, Charlotte Hornets and Sacramento Kings have all gone 12-8 against the spread. I chose the Kings as the third top team because they have found themselves as underdogs more than the other two teams. Sacramento has gone 10-10 this season, which has surprised many people. The difficult thing with the Kings is that they have a pretty young team, which leads to a lot of inconsistency.
The Rockets have struggled this season after finishing last season with the best record in the NBA. Houston has gone 9-10 to open up this season. The Rockets have been playing better as of recently, but they still have not been great. Houston has gone 7-12 against the spread this season. The Rockets are still favored pretty often, and they do not win in blowout fashion in their wins very often.
Washington is another case of a team that made it into the playoffs last season, but have struggled this season. The Wizards had a really bad start to the season going 1-7. Washington is 8-12 in the standings up to this point of the season. Washington is not listed as an underdog most of the time. This has led to a poor 7-12-1 record against the spread this season.
Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles struggled to begin the season, but have since been able to improve. The Lakers have gone 11-9 to begin this season. Los Angeles has not been great against the spread though. They have gone 7-13 against the spread. The Lakers are another team that is mostly listed as a favorite. Los Angeles is not great putting teams away.
Misleading Teams Against the Spread
The 76ers have been one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference this season. Philadelphia has gone 14-8, which has them in third place of the Eastern Conference. The 76ers have gone 8-14 against the spread this season. Philadelphia has had difficulty putting away teams that they are favored heavily against.
Golden State Warriors
Golden State has hit a pretty big wall recently and it has also shown in their record. The Warriors have gone 15-7 this season, which still has them near the top of the Western Conference standings. Against the spread though, Golden State has gone 9-13. The Warriors have found themselves getting hit pretty hard with the injury bug recently, which has not helped them.
The Cavaliers are the worst team in the Eastern Conference to this point in the season. Cleveland has gone 4-15 up to this point. The Cavaliers are only above the Phoenix Suns in the NBA standings. Against the spread, Cleveland has gone 10-9. Since the Cavaliers have been so bad, they are big underdogs, which allows them to cover these large spreads.
Chicago is another team that has not done well in the NBA standings, but haven’t been terrible against the spread. The Bulls have gone 5-16 to start out the season. Chicago has gone 10-11 against the spread. The Bulls have a young core, which makes them an inconsistent team. I believe that the Bulls could be a team that keeps up their solid record against the spread though.
