After Thursday night’s games, most NBA teams have reached the 30 game mark of the season. The Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, and Detroit Pistons are the only teams to not reach 30 games this season. Throughout the NBA season I have been keeping track of how each team is doing against the spread. I collect the spread off of BetOnline before each game and I compare how their record against the spread matches up with their record.
As we get closer to the mid-way point of the season, some teams are beginning to pick up the pace, while others are falling back down to earth after surprising starts. The NBA standings are taking shape, but I believe that there is still plenty of time for things to flip around for just about any team. This will lead to an exciting second half of the season.
The Nuggets have put up the best record against the spread so far this season. Denver has gone 19-11 against the spread this season. The Nuggets have posted an actual record of 21-9 this season. Denver has struggled with injuries this season, but have still been able to put up a good record. The depth on the Nuggets have been strong and I believe they will continue to be a top team in the Western Conference.
Sacramento struggled a lot of last season. That led to the Kings being big underdogs in a lot of their games this season. The youth of Sacramento has been doing well posting a record of 16-15 this season. The Kings have been able to keep it close in their losses to help give them a 19-12 record against the spread. Sacramento’s team is fueled by their younger players, which could lead to a lot of inconsistency, so I would be careful betting on them throughout the season.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs have been the model of consistency in the NBA for a while now. San Antonio had a slower start to the season, but have picked up their pace recently. The Spurs have gone 17-15 this season. San Antonio has posted a 19-13 record against the spread this season. The Spurs seem to have found some solid chemistry recently, so I believe they are a good team to bet on right now.
Washington has been a solid team in the past, but have had a rough start to the season. The Wizards have started out the season with a record of 12-20. Washington has gone 11-19-1 against the spread. The Wizards have a lot of talent on their team and I believe they could still turn it around, but they will need to do is sooner rather than later.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers had a slow start to the season, but are now sitting in fourth place in the Western Conference. Los Angeles has gone 18-13 this season. Against the spread though, the Lakers have gone 12-19. Los Angeles has been big favorites in a lot of their games and the Lakers have had difficulty putting away teams late.
Once again, Phoenix struggles to stay competitive in the NBA standings. The Suns have gone 8-24 to this point in the season. Phoenix has done a little better against the spread, going 13-19, but it is still not a great record. The Suns lineup is underperforming, and I believe they will continue to be near the bottom of the league this season.
Misleading Teams Against the Spread
The Rockets had a surprisingly slow start to the season after finishing near the top of the NBA last season. Houston has picked it up recently, getting their record up to 16-14. The Rockets are still a little rough when it comes to playing against the spread. Houston has gone 13-17 against the spread this season. The Rockets have been playing really well recently and I believe that their record against the spread will continue to turn around.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors once again are near the top of the NBA standings with a 21-11 record so far this season. Golden State has had some issues with injuries and chemistry early in the season, but have still played better than most. The Warriors have gone 14-18 against the spread though, which is not great. Golden State are large favorites in most games, which makes them a team to be careful to bet on.
The Cavaliers are the worst team in the Eastern Conference to this point in the season. Cleveland has gone 4-15 up to this point. The Cavaliers are only above the Phoenix Suns in the NBA standings. Against the spread, Cleveland has gone 10-9. Since the Cavaliers have been so bad, they are big underdogs, which allows them to cover these large spreads.
The Cavaliers have been one of the worst teams in the NBA this season. Cleveland has gone 8-24 to start out the season, which has them above only the Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Hawks. The Cavaliers have been solid against the spread though, going 16-16. Cleveland is big underdogs in most of their games, which allows them to cover pretty easily in a lot of their games.
