The top three spots on the major College Football polls remain the same, but there has been a ton of movement elsewhere in the Top 25 in the wake of this week’s epic slate of games. The contenders for the College Football Playoff look to be pretty clear-cut at this point in time, but that can of course change in a heartbeat.
While there’s only a pair of games this week between teams currently ranked in the Top 25, we can still anticipate plenty of movement in next week’s polls based on how Week 11 shakes out. Let’s take a look at where we see the top teams in the country as we get ready for another exciting week of games.
1. Alabama, 9-0
Last week: 1
The Crimson Tide faced their stiffest test of the season when they traveled to LSU to take on the #3 Tigers. Final score: Alabama 29, LSU 0. The biggest barrier between Alabama and an unblemished record looks to be if overconfidence seeps in, but it seems unlikely that head coach Nick Saban would allow that to happen.
2. Clemson, 9-0
Last week: 2
The Tigers made another statement on Saturday by rolling up 77 points on Louisville. That marked Clemson’s fourth game in a row in which they have scored 40+ points. Since being tested by Syracuse before that streak started, the school has been absolutely dominating opponents. A tricky road game at Boston College is up next.
3. Notre Dame, 9-0
Last week: 3
While the Fighting Irish haven’t been dominating opponents on the regular, the squad is still handling business versus whoever pops up next on the docket. Notre Dame’s mission the rest of the way is crystal clear: win out and the program snags a coveted playoff spot.
4. Michigan, 8-1
Last week: 5
The Wolverines made a statement of their own on Saturday afternoon by absolutely decimating the visiting Penn State Nittany Lions. A pair of winnable games – at Rutgers and home versus Indiana – are up next before Michigan closes out the season with a huge road game versus the rival Ohio State Buckeyes.
5. Georgia, 7-1
Last week: 6
Since falling to LSU, then the #13 team in the nation, the Bulldogs have ripped off a pair of convincing wins over a pair of Top 10 squads. Big victories over Florida and Kentucky have moved Georgia back up into the upper echelon of the polls. The team can now look forward to a date in the SEC title game with Alabama, but the squad needs to avoid landmines along the way.
6. Oklahoma, 8-1
Last week: 7
A three-game winning streak has moved the Sooners back to the top of the Big 12 standings. A final week matchup with the West Virginia Mountaineers looms large, but Oklahoma has a tough matchup with in-state rival Oklahoma State Cowboys to tend to first.
7. Washington State, 8-1
Last week: 10
The Cougars continue to make their case as the best team in the Pac-12, but the pollsters don’t seem all that sold as of yet. Washington State is currently ranked #10 by the AP and #9 by the coaches. The school’s five-game winning streak over conference foes is being vastly underrated.
8. Ohio State, 8-1
Last week: 8
The Buckeyes had a chance to come out and make a big statement at home versus the Nebraska Cornhuskers. While Ohio State secured a 36-31 victory, it was nowhere near the convincing win that many were expecting. The program still has a shot at a playoff berth, but confidence is waning.
9. UCF, 8-0
Last week: 9
The Knights handled business versus a tough Temple team this week, and both major polls responded by dropping the program two notches to #11. We’re not doing the same. While we understand the strength of schedule knocks against UCF, the bottom line is the school remains undefeated.
10. West Virginia, 7-1
Last week: 12
A thrilling victory over Texas has improved the Mountaineers standing in the polls considerably. The team has games against TCU and Oklahoma State on the docket before its season-ending showdown with Oklahoma.
11. LSU, 7-2
Last week: 4
While the Tigers proved to be no match for Alabama, we can say the same about everyone else who has been in the path of the Crimson Tide in 2018. LSU still has a great chance to finish out the season with an exemplary record, with two winnable games up next before its final regular-season tilt versus Texas A&M.
12. Kentucky, 7-2
Last week: 11
The clock struck 12 in loud and overwhelming fashion on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats were bulldozed by the visiting Georgia Bulldogs, which brought Kentucky’s dreams of an SEC East crown to a close. That said, there’s no reason for Kentucky to be hanging its collective head, as the school has delivered a memorable – albeit unexpected – regular season.
13. Utah State, 8-1
Last week: 18
The Aggies rolled to their eighth consecutive victory by dismantling Hawaii on Saturday. The team’s lone blemish on the season was a close road loss to the Michigan State Spartans. There’s a path to the Mountain West crown for Utah State, but a date with Boise State on the final weekend of the regular season looms large.
14. Syracuse, 7-2
Last week: 23
The Orange have lost just twice this year, and one of those defeats came while the team was providing Clemson with its toughest test of 2018 to date. Since dropping two in a row, Syracuse has ripped off three straight wins. A date with Louisville is up next.
15. Fresno State, 8-1
Last week: 21
The Bulldogs will also have something to say about how the Mountain West ultimately shakes out, as the program currently sits in first place in the West division. The program is riding an impressive seven-game winning streak, but tough tests versus Boise State and San Diego State are up next.
16. Boston College, 7-2
Last week: 22
The Eagles have screamed up the polls in the wake of an impressive win over Virginia Tech, bringing the school’s mark to 7-2 in advance of a huge game versus visiting Clemson on Saturday. The game has been moved to the primetime window on ABC, and the College Gameday crew will be in town.
17. Texas, 6-3
Last week: 14
The Longhorns have come back to earth after consecutive defeats. Texas stood at 6-1 and looked like a club that had a serious shot at the Big 12 crown just a few weeks back, but Oklahoma State and West Virginia took turns knocking them down a few pegs.
18. Mississippi State, 6-3
Last week: 25
The Bulldogs are the next team in line for Alabama, and oddsmakers aren’t optimistic that they’ll be able to make a game of it. The Crimson Tide are currently 26.5-point home favorites, so Mississippi State keeping the margin of victory at less than three touchdowns would be a small moral victory.
19. Washington, 7-3
Last week: NR
The Huskies are 2-2 over their last four, and the chances of the club making any serious noise in 2018 seem to have gone by the wayside. The school has a winnable game with Oregon State up next before closing out the season versus rival Washington State, so it will still have something to say about how the Pac=12 shakes out.
20. Florida, 6-3
Last week: 13
The Gators have dropped two straight in convincing fashion, and the squad has plummeted down the polls as a result. Florida has gone from SEC East contender to also ran in a hurry, but there’s still time to close out the season strong with a trio of winnable games up ahead.
21. Penn State, 6-3
Last week: 15
The Nittany Lions are also trending down after suffering their worst defeat of the season at the hands of Michigan. Penn State can still salvage a solid final mark by closing out the season strong, but a stiff test in the form of Wisconsin is up next.
22. NC State, 6-2
Last week: NR
After dropping back-to-back games against division rivals Clemson and Syracuse, the Wolfpack were able to get back on track with a victory over Florida State. NC State closes out the season with four winnable games, so a 10-win season is within reach.
23. Cincinnati, 8-1
Last week: NR
The Bearcats entered the Top 25 after a dominating win over Navy, but the season comes down to the next two weeks. A home game versus USF is followed up by a road tilt with UCF, Cincinnati’s chances at an American Athletic crown hang in the balance.
24. Iowa State, 5-3
Last week: NR
The Cyclones have shrugged off a shaky start to the season with four consecutive victories. Iowa State has three straight games with Big 12 rivals up next before closing out the season on December 1 versus Incarnate Word.
25. Michigan State, 6-3
Last week: NR
Since being handled by rival Michigan, the Spartans have won two straight in convincing fashion. Michigan State has a shot at playing spoiler on Ohio State’s season this Saturday, and the club then closes out the season with games versus Rutgers and Nebraska.
Among the teams falling out of this week’s polls and power rankings are Utah, Houston, and Iowa. Looking ahead, teams to watch include Auburn, Army, and UAB. For Week 11, we have just two games on the docket between nationally ranked squads.
- #18 Mississippi State @ #1 Alabama
- #2 Clemson @ #22 Boston College
Enjoy the games this week!
