NCAA Men’s Basketball

Now that conference play is officially in full swing, sportsbooks have released odds to win the regular-season championships for most of the major college basketball conferences. Early in conference play is the best time to make your bets, as the odds are only going to get sharper as we get deeper into league play.

In this article, we are going to break down the current betting odds for the American Athletic Conference (AAC), Atlantic 10 (A-10), Atlantic Coast (ACC), Big 12, Pac-12, and Southeastern Conference (SEC), and tell you which teams should win each league title, where the most value is for your bets, and which teams to stay away from. Let’s get started!

American Athletic Conference (AAC)

  • Memphis Tigers +225
  • Wichita State Shockers +250
  • Houston Cougars +400
  • Cincinnati Bearcats +425
  • SMU Mustangs +1000
  • UCONN Huskies +2000
  • Temple Owls +2500
  • South Florida Bulls +4000
  • Tulsa Hurricane +4000
  • UCF Knights +5000
  • East Carolina Pirates +6600
  • Tulane Green Wave +6600

Things just got really interesting in the American as current betting favorite Memphis went into Wichita State this week and lost on the road to the Shockers. Unlike many of the conference races we will discuss below, the American doesn’t have a prohibitive favorite at this point of the year.

The minute that projected lottery pick, Memphis center James Wiseman, decided to leave college to prepare for the NBA draft, this became a wide-open league with as many as five teams having a legitimate shot at taking home the crown.

Who Should Win

When you look at the analytics, it is actually Houston that is projected to win the regular-season title with a 13-5 record. The Cougars have started out league play by winning their first two games and have a showdown at Wichita State on the 18th that is going to answer a lot of questions. But even though the numbers favor Houston, I like Wichita State to win the league.

The Shockers started out the season playing some very weak competition, they didn’t even play a team in the top-100 until their seventh game of the season, but they have more than made up for it here in the last several weeks. The Shockers have won eight straight games, including top-100 wins over OK State, Oklahoma, VCU, Mississippi, and of course, the big win over Memphis.

Where Is The Value?

When you are making a future’s bet, it is less about which team will likely win and more about which teams offer the most value for the price, that could win. And for me, that is Houston. The data tells us they just might be the actual favorites, and when you can get them at an attractive price like +400, you need to make a play to back them.

Team To Stay Away From

I think a bet on any of the top four teams has a shot to come in, but the one team I don’t like at all, is SMU at +1000. The Mustangs have a great record at 12-2, and they are 2-0 in conference, but when you look at who they have played, I don’t think they are for real. The SOS is in the three hundreds for SMU, and they don’t have a single top-100 win. They have played a total of two top-100 teams, Georgetown and Georgia, and they lost them both.

Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10)

  • Dayton Flyers +100
  • VCU Rams +275
  • Rhode Island Rams +700
  • Duquesne Dukes +1600
  • George Mason Patriots +1600
  • Richmond Spiders +2200
  • Saint Louis Billikens +2200
  • Davidson Wildcats +2200
  • La Salle Explorers +4000
  • UMASS Minutemen +5000
  • Saint Joseph’s Hawks +5000
  • St Bonaventure Bonnies +6000
  • Fordham Rams +8000
  • George Washington Colonials +10000

The A-10 is strong top to bottom this season, coming in as the eighth highest-rated league in the land this year. But sadly, this doesn’t look like a league that is going to have much drama in terms of a competitive race for the regular-season title as the Dayton Flyers are major favorites to take the league title. VCU has a shot at dethroning the Flyers, but right now, the A-10 is Dayton’s to lose.

Who Should Win

Dayton. The Flyers have one of the best teams in school history, and they could very well find their way to the Final Four before all is said and done this year. Technically, Duquesne is in first place at 3-0, and while the Dukes should be a bubble team with a shot to go dancing in March, they aren’t going to have a shot to realistically content with the Flyers.

Where Is The Value

Rarely is there much value in betting a major favorite, but the number on Dayton is only going to shrink as we get deeper into league play. So, if you do want to make a play on the Flyers, the time to do it is now, as they are very quickly going to see that +100 number turn into a big negative one. The only team that I think has any value for a play outside of Dayton, is VCU at +275.

The Rams host the Flyers on January 14th. If they can find a way to knock them off, they will officially be part of the conversation about teams that could win the league. But when you look at the resume for the Rams, they have just one win against the top-100, that came over LSU way back in November, and while they were competitive against the likes of Purdue, Tennessee, and Wichita State, they lost to all three.

Team To Stay Away From

For the A-10, this is going to be everybody outside of Dayton and VCU. Currently, Richmond, Duquesne, Saint Louis, Rhode Island, and Davidson join the Rams and Flyers in the top-100, but I don’t think any of those teams really have much of a shot to compete. I hate to say laying chalk is the only option, but that is the case in the A-10.

Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)

  • Duke Blue Devils +275
  • Louisville Cardinals +275
  • Virginia Cavaliers+400
  • Florida State Seminoles +600
  • North Carolina Tar Heels +650
  • Virginia Tech Hokies +2500
  • NC State Wolfpack +2800
  • Clemson Tigers +5000
  • Miami Hurricanes +5000
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish +5000
  • Pittsburgh Panthers +5000
  • Syracuse Orange +5000
  • Boston College Eagles +8000
  • Georgia Tech Yellowjackets+8000
  • Wake Forrest Demon Deacons +10000

The ACC is always one of the best leagues in college basketball, and this year is no different. They have three teams in the top-15 on kenpom, two in the top-10 of the AP Poll, and all but one of league’s fifteen teams are currently in the top-100, with Boston College being the one outlier. Duke and Louisville are the co-favorites, and both have spent time ranked at number one in the country, but several teams will have a shot at taking home the title this season.

Who Should Win

This is a tough one as I really like a lot of teams from the ACC, but I can’t go against Duke right now. They have two elite players in point guard Vernon Carey Jr and Tre Jones and have shown they can beat anybody with top-five wins over Kanas and Michigan. They host Louisville on January 18th and if they beat the Cardinals, you are going to see this number drop significantly, so if you want to back Coach K and his Blue Devils, I suggest you make your bet before that game tips.

Where Is The Value

You can make a case for value all over this board. Duke is a good play as you are still getting dog money on them, and that won’t last much longer. And Virginia has taken at least a share of four out of the last six league titles under Tony Bennet, so his Cavaliers are providing nice value at +400. But the team I like the most, is Florida State.

The Seminoles are being completely ignored nationally right now, and they shouldn’t be. The Noles have seven wins over the top-100, including a big win on the road against Louisville. Both losses came in true road games, including a very unfairly scheduled conference true road game to open the season against Pittsburgh. Florida State has won seven straight games, and if they can beat Virginia at home in their next game, you are going to see the price on them plummet, back them know while you still can.

Team To Stay Away From

Are you kidding me right now? The North Carolina Tar Heels have a lower price than ten ACC teams? What a joke. The Tar Heels have looked completely lost without Freshman sensation Cole Anthony on the floor, and they are in free fall. After starting out the season 5-0, they have lost seven out of their last ten games, including an ugly loss to Wofford, in Chapel Hill. I wouldn’t back this team at any price, let alone as one of the betting favorites.

Big 12 Conference

  • Kansas Jayhawks +125
  • Baylor Bears +225
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders +550
  • West Virginia Mountaineers +600
  • Texas Longhorns +2000
  • Oklahoma Sooners +2200
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys +3000
  • Iowa State Cyclones +3300
  • Kansas State Wildcats +5000
  • TCU Horned Frogs +5000

Any time you are talking Big 12 basketball, the Kansas Jayhawks need to be considered the favorites. Kansas reeled off fourteen consecutive Big 12 titles before finally seeing Texas Tech snap that streak last year. But it looks like Kansas is in the midst of starting a new streak as they are again the favorites to win the league.

Who Should Win

This one is closer than one might think. Yes, Kansas is really good. They just might be the best team in the country, in fact. But the Baylor Bears aren’t far behind. The Bears are 12-1 and are currently fourth in the latest AP Poll, just one spot behind the third-ranked Jayhawks.

Baylor has signature wins over Villanova, Arizona, and Butler, and they made a big statement in the Big 12 when they went into Lubbock last week and beat reigning champs, Texas Tech. I would lean towards Kansas, but this one is going to come down to the wire.

Where Is The Value

You can’t go wrong backing either Baylor or Kansas and when they play tomorrow in Waco, that game is going to be a lot of fun. But I do also see a lot of value backing West Virginia lower down the board, at an attractive price.

The Mountaineers have seven top-100 wins, and they nearly beat Kansas in Lawrence last week, in a game they led by double-digits in the first half. Bob Huggins always puts a contender on the floor, and don’t be shocked when the Mountaineers hang around the top of the standings for the entire year.

Team To Stay Away From

With such a significant gap between the top half of the league and the bottom half of the league, I am likely to stay away from any of the long shots here, there is just too much talent at the top.

Pac-12 Conference

  • Arizona Wildcats +200
  • Oregon Ducks +200
  • Colorado Buffalos +550
  • Washington Huskies +650
  • Stanford Cardinal +1300
  • UCLA Bruins +2500
  • USC Trojans +2500
  • Arizona State Sun Devils +3000
  • Oregon State +3300
  • Utah Utes +3300
  • California Bears +8000
  • Washington State Cougars +8000

Well, we got a couple of questions answered last night when Oregon held off Arizona in overtime by a point. That win puts the Ducks as the favorites right now, but the Wildcats will get a chance to avenge that loss in Tucson in late February. But there is more to this league than Oregon and Arizona as Colorado, Stanford, and Washington are all in the top-50 as well.

Who Should Win

With the win last night, Oregon is the frontrunner. Kenpom currently projects this as an end of the year tie between the Cats and the Ducks with them sharing the Pac-12 crown, but I am going to go out on a limb and say that Oregon is the team to beat. The Ducks have five wins over five top-40 teams and nearly defeated the nation’s top team, Gonzaga in November.

Where Is The Value

While the Ducks and the Wildcats are deservedly the favorites right now, I would keep an eye on Washington at +650. The Huskies have underwhelmed a little bit to start league play as they are just 1-2. But they have two of the best players in the country in freshman Jaden McDaniels and Isiah Stewart.

Both of those guys are projected to go in the lottery of next year’s NBA draft, and when you have that much talent at a college level, you need to take notice. With the team being so young, they are only going to get better as they gain more experience. Maybe they won’t get their acts together in time for a run at the regular-season title, but watch out for them when the Pac-12 tournament comes around.

Team To Stay Away From

I just don’t like this Colorado Buffalos team. Maybe it is because eight of their twelve wins have come against teams outside of the top-100, with five of those coming against teams not even in the top-200. Maybe it is because they have losses to very mediocre teams like Oregon State and Northern Iowa. Whatever the case may be, I just don’t trust this team and wouldn’t touch them at the current price.

Southeastern Conference (SEC)

  • Kentucky Wildcats +200
  • Auburn Tigers +350
  • Florida Gators +550
  • Tennessee Volunteers +750
  • LSU Tigers +900
  • Arkansas Razorbacks +1600
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs +1600
  • Georgia Bulldogs +2000
  • Alabama Crimson Tide +3500
  • Missouri Tigers +4500
  • Ole Miss Rebels +4500
  • South Carolina Gamecocks +4500
  • Texas A&M Aggies +8000
  • Vanderbilt Commodores +8000

The SEC has very quickly gone from a football conference to a legit basketball league. It used to be Kentucky and Florida and then everyone else in the SEC, but this year, ten SEC teams are currently ranked at sixty-fifth or better on kenpom. In my estimation, you can count at least five teams as real contenders to win the conference this season.

Who Should Win

Kentucky was briefly ranked at number one in the country earlier this year, and that is a testament to just how much talent this team has. But I think Auburn is the team to beat in the SEC. The Tigers are one of the last remaining undefeated teams left in the country, and I love Bruce Pearl as the head coach. This team made it to the Final Four last year, and they look poised for another deep run this year.

Where Is The Value

I think Will Wade has the potential to do something special at LSU this season. A month ago, I probably would have said that, but they have really turned it up recently. The Tigers won the SEC regular-season title last year and made it to the Sweet 16.

All four of their losses have come to decent teams, and in their last three games, they beat Liberty, a team that is 17-1, they beat Tennessee in Knoxville, and they beat Arkansas at home. Remember, last year, the Tigers struggled in late November and early December and finished strong, that could very well happen again this season.

Team To Stay Away From

Florida Gators. When Kerry Blackshear Jr announced he was graduate transferring from Virginia Tech to Florida, the Gators immediately were thrust to the top ten nationally. But they just haven’t been able to gel yet this year, and I wonder if they ever will. There aren’t any bad losses on their resume, and they do have a couple of nice wins, but something tells me this team just won’t have a real shot to compete at the top of the SEC this year.

Wrap Up

Now that you have done your homework, the time is right to make your bets!
