Creighton Bluejays @ Villanova Wildcats, 8:00 PM EST, CBSSN
Creighton vs. Villanova pick:
Our first matchup features a Bluejays team which has picked up wins in three of their last four hitting the road to take on the top squad in the Big East, the Villanova Wildcats. The hosts have been red-hot and are beginning to live up to their early-season hype.
Villanova has won 10 games in a row, and they are creeping up the AP top 25 poll. They’ve been installed as big 9-point home favorites as they look to push their winning streak to 11. It’s a tough matchup for Creighton, and recent head-to-head history for the two squads leans heavily in one direction.
Creighton opened the season on a solid 6-1 run, but they have been a middle-of-the-road squad since that point. The Bluejays closed out December with a three-game winning streak, but they opened up the New Year by losing four consecutive contests.
Villanova has suffered a pair of two-game losing streaks this season, with two of those losses coming to ranked teams. Outside of that, the Wildcats have a six-game winning streak on their season-long resume to go along with their current 10-game run of perfection.
Ty-Shon Alexander checks in as the biggest threat for Creighton with 17.0 points per game, while Martin Krampelj adds in 12.0 points per contest. For the Wildcats, Phil Booth leads the way with 18.5 points per game. Eric Paschall is chipping in with an average of 17.4 points.
Team totals for Creighton are in the middle at 10-11 on the season. The team has hit the Under for its last three in a row. Villanova leans toward the Under at 6-13-2 for the year. However, the Over has been the correct call in four of the last six.
This will be the second meeting of the season for the two rivals. Last month, Villanova picked up a 90-78 road victory, a game for which they were installed as a 1-point favorite. For the last 10 meetings in this series, the Wildcats are 9-1.
Creighton is .500 over its latest stretch at 5-5 both straight-up and against the spread. The team also has a matching 2-4 record straight-up and against the spread on the road for the year. For their last four road contests, the Bluejays are 2-2.
Villanova is 9-2 straight-up at home and 6-5 against the spread. The team has been perfect over the last 10 while going 8-2 against the spread. The Wildcats are undefeated in their last five at home. Over the current winning streak, Villanova has won by double-digits in six of the 10 victories.
The Wildcats have resembled one of the top teams in the nation as of late, and they look like a squad which could do some damage come tournament time. We can’t loft the same praise at Creighton. We’ll take the hosts to pick up another victory to extend their impressive winning streak.
Wisconsin Badgers @ Minnesota Golden Gophers, 9:00 PM EST, BTN
Wisconsin vs. Minnesota pick:
We head over to the Big Ten for our next contest, a meeting of two clubs with identical overall records which have found differing levels of success in conference play. The Badgers have been hitting the right notes and sit just 1.5 games behind conference leader Michigan.
The Golden Gophers have had a tougher time in the Big Ten and are currently 3.5 games off the pace. However, one of their conference victories came on the road over Wisconsin last month. That sets up an intriguing rematch, which is further indicated by the tight spread.
Wisconsin opened the year at 8-1 before hitting a rough patch, but they have turned things around while ripping off five consecutive victories. That span includes two big home wins over ranked conference foes, including a 10-point win over Michigan on January 19.
Minnesota started out 6-2, but the team kicked it into gear and won their next six. Play has leveled out as the Golden Gophers have been trading wins and losses since that point with the exception of a two-game winning streak.
Ethan Happ is the biggest force for the Badgers with averages of 18.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. D’Mitrick Trice chips in with 13.6 points per contest. For the Golden Gophers, Amir Culley leads the way with 16.2 points per game. Jordan Murphy is contributing 14.9 points and 11.8 boards per game.
Team totals for both squads are in the middle. Wisconsin checks in at 10-11, while Minnesota stands at 11-10-1. The Badgers have been Under in five of their last six contests, while Minnesota has hit the Over in two of their last three.
Minnesota was a 9-point home favorite for their 59-52 victory over Wisconsin last month. That win snapped a run of eight consecutive Wisconsin victories in the series. For this matchup, we can give the Golden Gophers a slight statistical edge on offense, while the Badgers are the stronger defensive team.
Recent hot streak aside, Wisconsin is 6-4 both straight-up and against the spread over their last 10 games. Minnesota checks in with matching marks on both fronts for their previous 10 contests. The Badgers are 5-3 straight-up and against the spread on the road this season.
The Golden Gophers are a solid 12-1 at home this season, but just 7-6 against the spread. Over their last five road games, Wisconsin is 3-2 with victories in their last two. Minnesota is a perfect 5-0 in recent home contests.
As the close game line indicates, these two squads are evenly matched. Wisconsin is playing the better basketball of the two of late. When you add in the revenge factor for last month’s defeat, we like the Badgers to pick up the road upset.
LSU Tigers @ Mississippi State Bulldogs, 9:00 PM EST, ESPN2
LSU vs. Mississippi State pick:
The final game for our parlay ticket is a meeting of two SEC squads which are separated by three games in the conference standings. The Tigers have been playing their best basketball of the season, but they had their lengthy winning streak snapped last time out.
As for the Bulldogs, the program has leveled out since a solid start to the season. LSU has been excellent in SEC play so far, while Mississippi State has had its share of struggles in conference. These two rivals have hooked up for a few interesting affairs through the years, and we should be in line for another entertaining contest this evening.
LSU was solid but unspectacular while opening up the year at 7-3, but fortunes have changed dramatically. The team won 10 games in a row from that point, a streak which was snapped on Saturday when the Tigers fell by a score of 80-79 at home to Arkansas.
It’s the opposite story for Mississippi State. The team burst out of the gates on a 12-1 run, but they are just 4-4 over their last eight games. The team is 1-1 versus ranked teams over that span, dropping a road game to Kentucky but picking up a home victory over Auburn.
Tremont Waters is the leading scorer for the Tigers with averages of 15.1 points and 6.0 assists per game. Skylar Mays and Naz Reid are contributing 13.4 and 13.2 points per game respectively. For the Bulldogs, Quinndary Weatherspoon leads the way with 17.6 points per contest. Lamar Peters adds in 12.9 points, while Aric Holman contributes 10.9.
On totals, LSU is 12-8 for the year. The Over has been the right call in four of the team’s last five games. Mississippi State checks in at 12-9 on the Over/Under, but the team is 7-3 on that front over their last 10 games, and on a 3-0 run at the Over.
This is the first meeting of the season for the conference foes. They split two meetings last season, with the home squad coming out victorious both times. Mississippi State is 4-1 over the last five games in this series, but the programs are deadlocked at 5-5 over the last 10.
The Tigers are a stellar 9-1 straight-up and 7-3 against the spread over their last 10. The team is a solid 4-1 on the road on both counts. LSU has won its last four on the road, a stretch which includes two overtime victories.
The Bulldogs have had a tougher time over their last 10 contests with a record of 6-4 straight-up and 4-6 against the spread. The team is stout at home with a mark of 10-1 straight up and 6-5 versus the oddsmakers. Mississippi State is 2-1 in its last three home games.
This is a pretty even matchup on paper, but LSU has been playing better as of late. However, Mississippi State has gotten the better of the rivalry in recent years. We’re looking for the Bulldogs to pick up the victory and make the SEC race all the more interesting while covering at home.
