The 10-4 Razorbacks welcome SEC foe 8-6 Auburn into Fayetteville Wednesday night. These two teams met back on Dec. 30 at Auburn in a matchup that the Razorbacks won 97-85. The two teams rank ninth and 11th in the SEC standings, respectively, making this confrontation crucial for the NCAA Tournament hopes of both sides as the time to climb up the conference standings is fading fast. Arkansas has lost two games in a row and four of its last five following a 9-0 start to the season. In their last two games, the Razorbacks allowed 90 and 92 points, respectively, in blowout losses. Auburn has won two in a row and just beat Kentucky 66-59 last Saturday.
For Auburn it has been a tale of two seasons. Freshman star Sharife Cooper was declared eligible in early January and has provided a much-needed spark for the Auburn offense. Cooper is averaging 21.7 points per game in his three games and has eclipsed the 26-point mark twice. As Cooper goes, the Tigers’ offense goes, as they’ve registered 90 points or more in two of his three games. Arkansas’ hot start to the season appears to have been a mirage because cracks were beginning to reveal themselves even during its season-opening nine-game winning streak, especially on the defensive end. Now that their scoring has started to dip, the Razorbacks are struggling to find their footing in games.
The bet in this one is to take Auburn to win outright. This crux of this game boils down to the fact that these appear to be two teams headed in opposite directions. Auburn has received the jolt it needed with the addition of Cooper and Arkansas is struggling to find anything sustainable that will provide desired results right now. Auburn coach Bruce Pearl has his young team playing with more intensity and it has shown over the past month. Arkansas handled Auburn on the road earlier this season, but with Cooper being thrown into the mix this time around, it gives the Tigers an edge. Do not bother with the points, take the better odds or better yet Auburn at +205 to win it outright.
