The Belmont Bruins and Eastern Kentucky Colonels meet in what should be an entertaining contest in the Ohio Valley Conference on Thursday night. There are some highly ranked teams in action tonight, but if you are looking for a mid-major game, this one is certainly recommended. The Ohio Valley is a three-team race between Belmont, Morehead State, and Eastern Kentucky. Belmont thinks otherwise, though, and has to believe that this is a one-team race with no competition around them.
Their winning streak of 21 games will have you believing in the Bruins. Belmont is going into Thursday night with a tremendous record of 24-1. They are a perfect 18-0 in the conference, and have punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament regardless if they get upset in the Ohio Valley Tournament or not. In their latest win, the Bruins pounded Tennessee Tech by a score of 90-66 on February 20.
That was fully expected against a weak opponent like Tennessee Tech. With a spread of 21 points, Belmont covered to move to 17-6-1 ATS on the season. If you’ve just simply tailed Belmont all season and ignored all of the other noise in college basketball, you would be up a nice chunk of cash. The key is finding these teams early and sticking to the plan. Eastern Kentucky has been having a productive season with a record of 19-6 and 13-5 in the conference.
The Colonels have already lost to Eastern Kentucky once this season, 92-74, a couple of weeks ago at Belmont. As good as Eastern Kentucky has been, they are going to need to catch Belmont on an off day in the conference tournament. It’s possible, and I think it’s also going to require a perfect performance from the Colonels. They don’t have the defense to go toe-to-toe against Belmont on even terms. Belmont Bruins vs. Eastern Kentucky Colonels NCAA Betting Odds:
Belmont vs. Eastern Kentucky Prediction:
Eastern Kentucky will have to dig deep and try to find some defense tonight. In the first meeting, Belmont was dancing around the Colonels and doing whatever they wanted to do. The Bruins put up 50 points in the first-half to take a 50-32 lead at the half. If Belmont wanted to score more points and win by more, I’m sure they very well could have poured it on for more points. They put the game on cruise control in the second-half and emptied their bench. Despite going deep into the depth chart, Belmont still added 42 more points to take down the Colonels, 92-74.
The Bruins have one of the best offenses in the NCAA, at least statistically wise. Belmont has racked up an average of 82.8 points per game for tenth in the nation. There are only five teams in the NCAA that are shooting the ball better than Belmont from the field. The Bruins are 50.7% from the field for sixth.
If they were playing in a better conference, yes, Belmont wouldn’t be connecting at a clip that high. In any event, Belmont doesn’t, and they have another matchup against a beatable Eastern Kentucky defense this evening. The Colonels have to up the intensity at home or they are going to fall victim to another loss in similar fashion. Eastern Kentucky has allowed an average of 74.1 points per game for 270th in the NCAA.
Serviceable enough to compete in the Ohio Valley, but certainly not enough talent to prevent an offense like the Bruins from piling on the points. Belmont has scored at least 80 points in seven of their last meetings against the Colonels. We should expect the same from the Bruins in this contest. Eastern Kentucky had no answers for guard Ben Sheppard, as he exploited the Colonels for 25 points in the win. Offense has travelled for Belmont this season.
Note that they’ve recorded 85.3 points per game as a visitor. Fortunately for the Colonels, they’ve been scoring nicely as well this season, with 82.7 points per game for 11th in the NCAA. Their offense has been at its best at home, having scored 84 points a game. They were unable to keep up with Belmont a couple of weeks ago on the road, but should do better at home in this one. I like the final score to carry OVER the total at Eastern Kentucky University.
