Buffalo at Eastern Michigan NCAA Men’s Basketball Pick – Jan 4th

We hit a little road bump yesterday to slow down what has been a very strong couple of weeks of betting on college hoops. We backed the Iowa Hawkeyes getting ten points yesterday at Purdue. Iowa has one of the most efficient offenses in the country, and I expected them to keep the game tight enough to cover. But unfortunately for us, the Boilermakers used a big run late in the first half to take a 52-35 halftime lead. Iowa did a respectable job of tightening things up in the second half, even outscoring Purdue in the second half, but it was not enough to close the gap and cover the number.

The story in this one was turnovers. The Hawkeyes had taken great care of the ball all season long but turned it over fourteen times in this one. Carsen Edwards continued his high level of play as he scored twenty-one points in the win for Purdue. With the loss, Iowa will almost certainly fall out of the top twenty-five nationally and are now 0-3 in Big 10 play. That is after going 11-0 in the non-conference. Will Iowa be able to compete with a loaded Big 10 this year? The early returns are not promising. There aren’t going to be many easy wins in the loaded Big 10 this season, Iowa needs to figure things out, and fast.

For Purdue, they confirmed what we had been suspicioning, that this team is much better than its record reflects. The win was a big one for Purdue to get things moving in the right direction after a rocky start. For today’s pick, I will switch gears from the Big 10 to MAC as the Eastern Michigan Eagles host the Buffalo Bulls.

The Buffalo Bulls head to Eastern Michigan tonight to kick off their conference schedule. Buffalo has been very impressive so far to start the season as they are 12-1 and ranked number twenty in the AP Poll. They have big wins over West Virginia, San Francisco, and Syracuse. The Bulls are led by guard CJ Massinburg who is scoring eighteen points a game to go with seven rebounds and three assists.

For Eastern Michigan, this season has been one full of disappointment as they have a losing record on the season at 6-7. And that was after a fast start that saw them sitting at 4-1 in November. The Eagles don’t have a single good win on their resume and have several bad losses, including losses to Northeastern, UC Irvine, and Detroit. The Bulls are -10-point road favorites. The game total over-under is set 142.5 points. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM PST from the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

I have been riding this Buffalo Bulls team all season long. They play in a small league, but this is a legit team. We saw glimpses of what to expect from this team last year when they blew out a very talented Arizona Wildcats team in the first round of the NCAA tournament. They went into the tournament as a double-digit seed last year and surprised people. They aren’t going to surprise anyone this year though as this is a very good team and the nation has begun to take notice.

They showed they meant business early this year when they went into Morgantown, arguably one of the toughest places to play in the country, and beat the Mountaineers. They had another strong true road win when they went to the Carrier Dome and beat a ranked Syracuse team. This team has shown me that they can beat good teams, even in their own building.

And you would be hard pressed to call this Eastern Michigan team anything but dreadful. This team has spent the entire season getting blown out by good teams and losing close to bad ones. Duke beat them by nearly forty, Rutgers beat them by twenty-seven, Kansas beat them by twenty-five, TCU beat them by eighteen. Time and again this team has shown me that they just can’t compete with talented teams, and make no mistake, this Bulls team is very talented.

This one all comes down to how much is the Eagles home floor worth? They have lost home games to UC Irvine and Detroit already this season. So, that tells me their home court isn’t worth all that much. As a general rule, I almost never lay double-digit points against a home team in their own house. But for this one, I will make an exception. I just see the talent gap as just too high in this one. I think the Bulls dominate every facet of the game and win this one going away and easily cover the number. Give me the Buffalo Bulls laying -10-points tonight from Eastern Michigan!

The Bet: Buffalo Bulls -10 points
