Clemson Tigers vs. Syracuse Orange Pick – NCAAM March 3, 2021

The Clemson Tigers and Syracuse Orange go to-toe-toe at the Carrier Dome on early Wednesday evening in Syracuse, NY. Syracuse is on the bubble at the moment, and a couple of wins against North Carolina and Clemson to close out the regular season would serve them well. The Orange head into the Carrier Dome with a record of 14-8, and coming off a monster win over the Tar Heels, 72-70.

That was a much needed win for Syracuse at home. This is another big spot for Syracuse against Clemson. With the ACC Tournament pending, Syracuse would finish off the season at 15-8 if they can win this evening. I think that should be enough, but if they flame out early in the ACC Tournament, then certainly their seat is going to be really hot. Syracuse is eighth in the ACC with a conference record of 8-7.

Florida State is up in the conference at 10-3 on the season. The Orange appear to be the cut off for going to the NCAA Tournament in the ACC. That would give them eight teams. There is no way a 11-10 Duke Blue Devils team would get the nod despite them being Duke. There is still one last-ditch effort for Duke in the ACC Tournament, though. I’m not holding my breath, nor should their fans.

Clemson is going to be in regardless of what they do in the ACC Tournament. They’ve earned it this season, as they go into Monday with a record of 15-5 and 9-5 in the conference. Clemson is hot right now with five straight wins, including a 78-61 win over the Orange on February 6. Since then, the Tigers have won three more games against Georgia Tech, 74-72, Wake Forest, 60-39, and Miami, 66-58.

It’s all about getting hot at the right time, and certainly Clemson has been feeling good lately. Clemson will wrap up the regular season on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Panthers at home. The regular season title is out of reach for Clemson in the ACC, so there isn’t much to play for at this point. However, if they lose their next three games against Syracuse, Pitt, and the first-round of the conference tournament, they could be back on the bubble. Clemson vs. Syracuse Prediction:

Any team winning the ACC Tournament would not surprise me. That goes for Clemson and Syracuse. I would have more confidence if Syracuse was able to play all of their games in the Carrier Dome. They might even be the favorite to win the ACC if the tournament was hosted in Syracuse.

The Orange are a completely different team at home rather than on the road. They’ve gone an abysmal 2-7 as visitors, but improve to 12-1 at home in the Carrier Dome. Their only loss came against Pitt on January 6, 63-60. Otherwise, Syracuse has been untouchable in the Carrier Dome, as the intensity gets kicked up several notches for them. The 2-3 zone looks a little more productive when they’re inside the Carrie Dome.

Syracuse is 216th in the NCAA with 71.5 points allowed per game. When the Orange play at home, they’ve conceded 66.1 points per game. Clemson was able to score 81 points in the first meeting against Syracuse, but I’m not expecting as efficient of a game for the Tigers in this one at the Carrier Dome. Clemson has done their damage this season with their defense.

If this team didn’t play a tough brand of basketball, they would not be looking at a record of 15-5 going into Wednesday. Clemson has netted just 65.4 points per game for 307th in the country. They’re shooting 42.5% from the field. Nothing too impressive, but haven’t needed it in the ACC to find success. In the NCAA Tournament?

Yeah, they’re going to need to get hot offensively. The Tigers have conceded just 61.7 points per game for 11th in the NCAA. In their last five, they’ve been in the best form, with 56 points against per game. Only one team has scored more than 61 points against Clemson in those five outings. I like a 68-62 or 70-61 final score, so the UNDER should be attainable.
